Baloney. Bell Laboratories invented cellular networks and phones, but saw their initial practical use to be in automobiles. Martin Cooper was simply a guy at Motorola who believed that a few rich, burly people might be willing to tote around an enormous, obscenely expensive walkie-talkie-style phone (e.g., on a construction site). Neither Bell Laboratories nor Motorola could envision the miniaturization and cost reduction necessary to produce modern wireless phones.

Needless to say, Bell Laboratories was ahead of Motorola technologically at every stage of the industry's technological advancement. The FCC actually passed a rule requiring Bell Laboratories to slow down so that Motorola could catch up! More precisely, the phone company's cellular license in every city had to be held up for 6 months so that it wouldn't have the "unfair" advantage of getting to market first! Indeed, it is fair to say that except for the FCC's deliberate skewing of the playing field in Motorola's favor, that company wouldn't have had a chance in the new market.

This description, although still fawning, is at least somewhat accurate. Again, keep in mind that these "portable" phones were god-expensive behemoths, quite impractical except in certain industries such as construction.

patents are stupid anyways...imagine if there were no patents. people could make knock offs that worked just as well or even better.
