Keep the power off for a whole month, then turn it back on again. If you get billed for that month, then they are ripping you off.

Re: How can you tell if the power company is ripping you off?
Yep, over the past four years I have:

Insulated the house (including insulating walls that were previously uninsulated due to 1960's construction)

Installed a much more efficient AC unit

Installed an Energy Star Washing Machine

Installed new windows throughout the house that are low-E and better insulated than previous.

Now use all compact flourescent lights.

Grand result on my average KWH/month (elect) and therms/month (gas) compared to average usage five years ago (as reported by my energy companies (gas and elect)?............. NO CHANGE!

I understand weather changes from year to year but I have been logging my monthly usage for 15 years now. I have graphs showing usage. The long-term trend at my house is that although I have done a ton of energy conservation over the years it appears it is not paying off.

Anyone else experiencing this?

They have secretly figured out how to send modified electricity that doesn't have the energy that was sent years ago and thus you have to use more of it. It is crap electricity!!!

I was being ripped off by a lazy meter reader, so I had to take digital pictures of the meter with a date stamp to fight the power company. Although they refunded me about 95% of the billing, they never admitted fault

Excellent suggestion! When I had a house full of kids, my monthly usage was around 1200 KW. Now that the kids are gone and I barely use any electricity, my billing shows 3000 KW per months usage! I KNOW I'm being ripped off, but could not figure out how to catch them at it. I'm going to start taking photos right away.

Each and every house should have its own generator. Of course, we would have to purchase the generator and pay for its upkeep and maintenance, but the power it generates would be ours to do with as we please. The grid is a scam and we all fell for it.

Re: How can you tell if the power company is ripping you off?
back in the '90's I was the supervisor/maintenence man of a small 6 unit apt building. I was in the utility room were the 6 meters for each apt were located. All of a sudden, one of the six meters started spinning out of control, so much in fact that you could hear the sound of the spinning from 25ft away. The other 5 were spinning at a "normal" rate, but this one was unbelievably fast, he had to be powering lights similar to Clark in "Christmas Vacation." This went on for about 5 minutes. When I asked him about it, it turned out he was not even home at the time. Not sure if he ever followed up with the power company or not.

On the other side, I also noticed my bill was always particularly high, was not sure why, but it turned out that the outside light of the apt complex was hooked up to my meter, this light was on pretty much 24/7. After the electrician came and changed things around, my bill did decrease by 50%.

I know this won't be well received, but I had an issue with a bill, and I called the power company, and we talked about it, and they agreed a mistake had been made and they knocked that much off the next bill.

I was calm and polite and joked with the guy, maybe that helped, but I never got the impression they were out to 'rip me off.'

The amount of the overage was 112 bucks. This was before the smart meter.

Re: How can you tell if the power company is ripping you off?
"FUCK AEP!!!!!!!!"

Let me guess... First step to socialism is with the smart meter.

Fact: Meter Reader can make mistakes. I assure you not inintinal. But they can fat finger the numbers. Or "special" customers lock their fence or make it impossible for the reader to get the information they need.

Fact: All electric bills are show usage and all the tarrifs in which you are billed off of are available through state sites or through the power company.

Fact: There is more then enough equipment out there for a us customers to record what we use and determine our bill. A little effort on your part can prevent any radical unfounded notions you have that you are being ripped off.

Seriously provide factual data about your usage and your bill to us to see if you have been ripped off. If by facts you show that is the case and the Power Company (in this case AEP) says tough then you have a legit gripe. I can almost assure you that will not be the case.

The problem with AEP rates is that they have been bragging about a 58% profit while bending us over double.

VEPCO lowered their rates this year. But VEPCO didn't have to clean up any coal-dsut spills lately either.

What we need to do:
Every AEP customer buy 1 share of AEP stock. We then appoint 1 person to vote ALL shares. WE take control.

What if only 49% of stock is available for public purchase? So 51% still remain with AEP and other provate investors. Seems like we would own a stock in a utility. Though they pay a good dividend I assure you that you can find better investments.

Two things you can do:

1. Read your own meter, as posted above. Many people don't realize that meters are not always read, they are often estimated. Double check the power company's work.

2. Measure your own usage. Meters are also notoriously inaccurate. I used to work for an energy control company, we proved many industrial meters to be out and got huge refunds for our customers. You can get your own usage meter:

now go back to the old ways. a root cellar to store food . a wood stove for heat and cooking. . a well for water with a back up hand crank to the kitchen sink if shtf and powere is impossible or you just want off grid during the day . foiled windows. just put another curtain over the foil to hide it from the street . foil over the intire top of the attic insulation by using the Shiny side of the foil toward the sky .This should up your "R" rating . 2000 liniar sq ft foil will cost bout $100.00 extra heavy duty foil would be better to hold your air and heat in your you home. .. roll foil out and lay it on top of attic insulation. Now this work will be tuff and you might fall threw the ceiling into your living room while doing this job. so beware .Also flooring attic might help too. line dry clothing in a spare room ..wear work clothing two days if possible before they are laundried again. ...
