Moderate earthquake hits Russian island of Sakhalin
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 at 10:11 am | BNO NEWS | LEAVE A COMMENT
OKHA, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake hit the Russian island of Sakhalin on Tuesday, seismologists said.
The earthquake at 7.44 p.m. local time had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about 164 kilometers (102 miles) south-southwest of the town of Okha, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). An earthquake at that depth is considered to be shallow.
The magnitude of the earthquake was too low to cause a tsunami threat. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the earthquake.
