The earthquake at 7.44 p.m. local time had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about 164 kilometers (102 miles) south-southwest of the town of Okha, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). An earthquake at that depth is considered to be shallow. The magnitude of the earthquake was too low to cause a tsunami threat. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the earthquake. |
