Anonymous Coward User ID: 919114 Canada 03/19/2010 01:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know that the earth has gone through a few changes lately, and may well be a little out of "position" compared to historical; however, I'm helping my son with a "moon project" at school, and noticed something a little strange. Quoting: SaveUSa NLI 671825He is supposed to be tracking the phases of the moon all throughout the remainder of March, so we're basically supposed look up each night and he's to draw a picture and record the phase (new, waxing, waxig gibbous, etc.). Well, this works fine when the sky is clear, but the first night we had to do this was last night, and it was completely cloudy. I subsequently utilized the following website to see what the moon was supposed to look like in my town, and we recorded. [link to www.almanac.com] Anyways, the sky is clear tonight here, so we were able to see the moon in all its glory. As we were looking up, however, I recalled last night's visit to the almanac site indicating that we were supposed to have a New Moon on the 15th, with only 8% or so showing by March 18th. In fact, based on the pictured phase for the 18th, you should only be able to see a very minute sliver tonight. Instead, the moon is essentially as it should appear on the 20th or 21st. Furthermore, the waxing is supposed to be from right to left, but is instead moving from the bottom up. I'm obviously no atronomer, but this is strange nonetheless (assuming the Almanac site is correct). Anyone with more knowledge in this regard care to explain? Thanks... Interesting that you should comment. I was out on 17th for the first time in ages and drove home facing the moon. Its appearance for the date was sufficiently odd that I commented to the person that I was with. Again this evening I went out and the person I went out with commented on it. There is too much showing and the reset of the moon is visible as if in shadows. At this time it should only be a bright sliver with no other part visible. Also as you noted the silvery light is at the bottom, it should be higher up the disk. |

Those who see it see it and the rest just want to kick you in the nuts for your trouble. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 919450Thanks for the heads up, though. Something is definitely up. OP, you are right, the Moon is different then it used to be, and there are 2-3 threads since February about the same subject. Thread: Anyone see the strange crescent moon tonight? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 795135Thanks... First, nothing is "out of position". The exact angle of the crescent is dependent on where you are on the earth (it is "upside down" for those in the southern hemisphere and at various other angles for other locations). Also, the apparent angle will change as the night progresses. So web sites cannot show the correct angle without knowing your location and time, so they always show it as horizontal. Think about the geometry of it from the viewpoint of someone standing on a sphere and it makes perfect sense. I live at 69°47′09″N 20°57′01″E (far up north in Norway). According to our almanc, it should not have risen yesterday...but it did!?!? Totally tilted, too crescent and visible in the south at 8 pm cet. This is not how it should look for us... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 920220 Switzerland 03/19/2010 06:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The moon according to the almanac should be barely waxing on the right but this is not the case it is a crescent on the bottom for 2 days now but yesterday it had rainbow type colors at the bottom. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 795542Riker has a thread somewhere about his parents and the moon. One of the posters also mentioned the rainbow colors. |

Quoting: Whiskey Brother 917784The internet is actually creating a huge amount of paranoid morons, living in a fictional reality based on shit they saw on you tube or sites such as this one. Well actually it was going more and more into that direction... It seems it is changing course however, as more any more people use the power of good sources to determine what is true, what isn't, and when there is not enough information to know. |

I spend hours outside at night sometimes waiting for my girlfriend to come home because where she parks isn't too close to where we live nor well lit enough for safety. Besides that I work a night shift and I walk to and from work since my job is nearby. So I see the sky all the time and some things are really weird out there. I guess time will tell. |
