What speed!
The fake russian discovered something that is already well known from almost two weeks, a pair of places registerd some cases of bird flu (turkey) in Italy.
It was reported on Italian and foreign media (CNN, too), and Italy blocked selling and exporting from a number of places.
Nothing worse that that was registered, in particular no human affected, but it´s enough for the sick doom-addict to go to a tangent.

Well this certainly explains why the Yanks are losing both their minds and waist lines.

And if I understand all of this correctly, and someone please correct me if I´m wrong, it takes about a decade and hundreds of millions of dollars to place a drug on the US market...but without any long term studies they can put genetically modified (GM)crops in 75% of your food!

I guess the only thing worse than that is that the Yanks actually eat it.

Reductionism and Anti-Americanism

Those who adhere to doctrines that reduce the universe to an easily comprehensible set of notions, tend to uphold a distorted picture of reality. We are all implicated in this tendency because we all want to understand the world, yet every form of understanding is an abridgment of reality that necessarily misunderstands the whole. Imaginative enthusiasm leads us to a constructive misremembering and a faulty arrangement of fact and context. We believe what we want to believe, and sometimes we see what we want to see. The potentially most destructive distortions are those in which persons or governments are unfairly maligned. The anti-American press in Asia, Latin America and Europe exemplify this process of distortion. The distortion, in turn, fuels terrorism and bolsters the world’s aspiring dictators who are threatened by the advance of freedom. Although the Marxist-Leninist form of communism has faded from Russia, clever and more flexible variants of anti-capitalism and anti-Americanism are forming into a compact mass. These doctrines preach the wickedness of America as the world’s leading polluter, exploiter and imperialist power. “If you want war,” wrote William Graham Sumner, “nourish a doctrine. Doctrines are the most fearful tyrants to which men ever are subject, because doctrines get inside of a man’s own reason and betray him against himself. Civilized men have done their fiercest fighting for doctrines.”

Hatred is a staple of those who seek to unify different forces under one banner. In The True Believer, Eric Hoffer wrote: “Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensible of all unifying agents. It pulls and whirls the individual away from his own self, makes him oblivious of his weal and future, frees him of jealousies and self-seeking.” According to Hoffer, “Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a God, but never without belief in a devil.” Hitler was once asked whether he sought the destruction of the Jews. “No,” he replied, “We should then have to invent [the Jews]. It is essential to have a tangible enemy, not merely an abstract one.” Hitler’s answer revealed the extent to which he understood the motivating formula of his doctrine. Today the totalitarian movements of the world are linked by one theme, one doctrine and one enmity. America is the enemy of mankind, the exploiter of the poor and oppressor of the weak. Destroy America and a better world will be possible. However dressed up, this is the doctrine of Al Qaeda. It is also the doctrine of the ruling Iranian clergy, of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro, to name but a few.

The anti-American distortion is not only a phenomenon of the Third World, of a resentful Russia or emerging China. “Within some democratic countries,” explained Jean-François Revel, “a subset of the population, some political parties and a majority of intellectuals, were prone to adhere to Communism, or at least support similar ideas. For this crowd, anti-Americanism was rational, since America was identified with capitalism, and capitalism with evil.” Less rational was the Left’s willingness to swallow “the most flagrant and stupid lies about American society,” noted Revel. What troubled the French writer most of all, was the anti-Americanism of “those who feared and rejected Communism.” Hatred of America is a natural tendency in those who resent the second or third-rate status of their own countries. “It is in France that this loss … of great power status engenders the most bitterness,” Revel admitted. The imagination seeks to justify a wounded national pride. “In Latin America, emotional currents are ruled by a very old grudge: the grudge of an America that failed against an America that succeeded….”

Eric Hoffer wrote: “That hatred springs more from self-contempt than from legitimate grievance is seen in the intimate connection between hatred and a guilty conscience.” Thus it is more than sinister that Russia’s president indirectly suggested, last summer, that America was behind the Chechen terrorists who killed hundreds of children at Beslan. There is a psychology of hatred and blame that manufactures lies in the same way that a sausage factory makes sausages. It is often said that once you find out what a sausage is made of, you will never eat a sausage again. The same may be true of lies made in totalitarian hate-factories. Once you know what goes into them, you’ll never swallow one again.

But there is a human tendency to swallow everything. We want to be satisfied. We are empty and want to be full. We want answers, we want conclusions and God forbid that they lead us to further questions. Learning to see, wrote Nietzsche, involves “habituating the eye to repose, to patience, to letting things come to it; learning to defer judgment, to investigate and comprehend the individual case in all its aspects.”

Our tendency is the opposite of repose and patience. We do not defer judgment. More often than not, we rush to judgment. Furthermore, “Seeing is believing,” and all too often believing is a cherished form of seeing (in the absence of intellectual integrity). Consider, in this light, the belief that America is a bad country led by evil men. If only the situation were that simple. Jean-Francois Revel, in a book titled Anti-Americanism, wrote as follows: “The pitying sniggers ritually directed against the American whipping boy by the European media … come for the most part from an ignorance so profound that it seems deliberate.”

All ideologies subvert the truth through a process in which reality is simplified by reduction. “I soon realized that the correct use of propaganda is a true art which has remained practically unknown to the bourgeois parties,” wrote Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf. “The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas of the great masses and finding, through a psychologically correct form, the way to the attention and thence to the heart of the broad masses.” Hitler further stated: “The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered.”

The key point in Hitler’s statement is the one about “understanding the emotional ideas of the great masses.” In Robert Kagan’s national bestseller Of Paradise and Power, the author struggles to understand Europe’s double standard in condemning America’s invasion of Iraq. “As the Iraq crisis approached in 2002 and early 2003,” noted Kagan, “many Europeans simply shifted their view of both international law and international legitimacy.” Why did they do this? What was the emotive cause of Europe’s shift? Kagan suggests that, in part, Europe’s double standard is a ploy to constrain the United States.

Envy is a swamp, and a feeling of thwarted ambition lies at the bottom of this swamp. As German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer once confessed: “The question now is: What will become of the Europeans given the dominant role of the United States? Will they be able to determine their own fate or will they merely be forced to carry out what has been decided elsewhere?” According to Revel, the crux of the matter is very different than that presented by Fischer. “Obsessed by their hatred and floundering in illogicality, these dupes forget that the United States … is also acting in the interest of us Europeans….”

In the end, hatred is about power and influence. More often than not, the hated object is merely “in the way.” America stands in the way of Chinese or Russian or European global dominance. Each man dreams of his own glory, and the more he dreams the more he loathes standing in the shadow of a greater man. In Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar, Cassius laments that Caesar has “now become a god; and Cassius is a wretched creature….” Cassius is incensed that Caesar should “get the start of the majestic world, and bear the palm alone.” Caesar bestrides the “narrow world like a colossus; and we petty men walk under his huge legs, and peep about to find ourselves dishonorable graves.”

The emotion is a powerful one. It animates ideologies and moves continents.

The world’s first monument to stray animals, a dog depicted in bronze, will be erected in a downtown Moscow pedestrian subway, Interfax news agency reports.

The decision to set up a memorial called “Sympathy” came to the creators after one of them saw a woman killing a stray dog that had attacked her own pet.

“I want to stress that it is not a monument to that specific dog, but a symbol of our sympathy and attitude towards stray animals on the whole,” sculptor Alexander Tsigal told the agency.

The money for the monument was raised by famous Russian actors.

There are tens of thousands of stray dogs in Moscow, but it is impossible to determine their exact number. The authorities spend about $1 million a year on the “dog problem”. Half of this sum is spent on catching and sterilizing them.
Moscow authorities will place electronic chips on every stray dog in the city to count them, RIA Novosti reports.

Chips will be produced in the town of Zelenograd, a high-tech center near Moscow. The cost of one device is about $2.50.

Russian villagers on the Far East Kuril Islands are desperately trying to rescue four killer whales trapped beneath ice near the shore. The whales are unable to swim up for air or swim away into the open sea.

With temperatures in the area dropping to 25 degrees below zero, dozens of residents of the nearby village of Reidovo are using chainsaws to drill a canal between two ice-holes about 80 meters from the shore so that the whales will have enough room to swim and breath, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

By cutting a canal about 100 meters long, the rescuers hope to allow the whales to survive in the ice drift another two or three weeks. Hopefully by that time the weather will change, and the ice will float away into the open sea, freeing the whales.

Rescuers from the Emergency Ministry are taking part in the effort, which is headed by the inspector of a local sea mammal protection agency, Viktor Isenko.

He said that several days ago six whales were trapped in the area; two have died since then, the Interfax news agency reported.

But officials from the Emergency Ministry have little hope that the villagers will be able to save the whales, because the canal they would need to cut would have to be much bigger. The only hope is a change in weather sometime soon.

Law enforcement authorities have seized 127 rare falcons worth $5 million that were being smuggled to Syria from a Russian military airbase in Kyrgyzstan, in the biggest bird smuggling racket uncovered in the region.

The hunting birds were found as they were about to be flown from Russia’s Kant airbase in the former Soviet republic, Reuters reported.

“This is an unprecedented case,” Kyrgyz Special Prosecutor Galina Pugacheva told Reuters, saying it was the biggest bird smuggling racket uncovered in the impoverished ex-Soviet state.

When investigators moved in, the birds, hidden in boxes, were being loaded on to a passenger plane at the airbase, near the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek. They had not been fed for two days and one of them had a broken leg. The birds were recovering in a nursery and would be returned to their natural habitat.

The Russian military, which rents the Kant airbase from the Kyrgyz government, said it had nothing to do with the smuggling, Interfax news agency reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Kyrgyzstan last year to open the base, saying its purpose was to help fight “international terrorism” in the region.

U.S. Gives Asylum to Family of Disabled Child Victimized in Russia

A U.S. federal appeals court has granted asylum eligibility to the family of a Russian child with cerebral palsy that fled Russia because of discrimination, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Evgueni Tchoukhrova was born in 1991 in the Far Eastern Russian city of Vladivostok and afflicted with cerebral palsy chiefly through negligence during childbirth. He was even dumped into a waste disposal bin by the maternity hospital staff, and then institutionalized against his parents’ wishes.

The family got him out of hospital and brought him to the U.S. for treatment. But after their return, Evgueni was denied medical care and schooling. Moreover, he was taunted and assaulted when in public.

Eventually the family left Russia for San Diego, California, in 2000, where they applied for asylum.

Immigration courts denied the claim of the Tchoukhrovs, saying the abuse the boy suffered was not severe enough to constitute persecution. But the appeals court disagreed, saying it was persecution to be “treated as waste”. The Judge even stressed the abuse Evgueni suffered is typical of the discrimination faced by disabled children in Russia.

Stalinism Is Personal

We didn´t have Communists in Texas. We did talk about them a lot, though.

There was something comical about Communists when I was growing up, and even their vaunted nuclear missiles didn´t seem to be THAT real to an eight-year-old boy who reasoned that, if they couldn´t grow wheat or raise livestock successfully, it was unlikely they could get the directional codes right on an ICBM.

Equally silly, though, were the Commie-haters, red-baiters and John Birch Society pamphleteers--of which we had an oversupply in Texas--and they tended to be even more laughable because they were closer to home. The only thing more ludicrous than a Communist was somebody like H.L. Hunt, the oilman, who spent his whole life trying to track Communists down.

One of my favorite books was "Fear on Trial," the story of my fellow Texan John Henry Faulk´s blacklisting and long legal battle to clear his name with the help of superstar attorney Louis Nizer. Faulk was a good-ole-boy morning radio personality in the style of Arthur Godfrey, but he´d been railroaded in the fifties by the kind of old fogey who meddles in other people´s affairs by imagining Communist agents lurking at every bus stop. Faulk was never a Communist, but he WAS a liberal, and he´d attended a meeting in New York where some Communists were seen, resulting in a big grocery-store magnate (in the H.L. Hunt mode) putting him on a blacklist. His CBS show was cancelled and he never again worked in network radio or TV--except toward the end of his life, when he was brought out of retirement to tell jokes on "Hee Haw."

That´s why, when I was older, and I became a member of the Writers Guild of America West, I thought I understood what blacklisting was. You weren´t anybody in the Writers Guild unless you´d been blacklisted. The blacklistees were huge celebrities, and they were always having charity dinners where they honored the Hollywood Ten--or was it the Hollywood Nine?--and made speeches about the evils of McCarthyism and how they´d had to use frontmen to get their screenplays produced. I always assumed that these guys were John Henry Faulk types who got run out of town by H.L. Hunt types.

And then it slowly dawned on me: they really were . . . Communists! They didn´t really say that at the charity dinners-- they never stood up and said "I was a proud Communist and they persecuted me for that!" But, in fact, we now know from declassified KGB documents that the Writers Guild, the Animators Guild, and several other Hollywood unions were reporting directly to Moscow as early as the 1930s.

I don´t get it. I don´t see how they could take orders from Stalin´s functionaries in the thirties, forties and fifties, and I don´t see how, decades later, they could honor one another as though they´d done something noble. Let´s assume the very best-- that they were misguided idealists who truly believed in some kind of socialist utopia. All right then--since they were some of the few Communist intellectuals in the world who were NOT subject to arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, shouldn´t they have been using their freedom to save a few writers in Russia? Shouldn´t there be something in the KGB file to identify them as a DISSIDENT Communist cell?

But no, they were holding onto the party line, in one form or another, as late as the 1970s. Maybe they started calling it lower-case "communism," or maybe they switched to socialism, or maybe they became Trotskyites (to separate themselves from the atrocities of Stalin), or maybe they developed some convoluted theory that, if only Lenin had lived longer, Communism would have worked. But whatever SLIGHT alterations they made in their position, they remained committed to a system that I´m now convinced was far worse than Naziism.

Whatever you can say about Hitler, Stalin´s numbers are worse, and even his METHODS are worse--the torture, the humiliation, the show trials, the forcing people to praise him right before they were shot, the use of exile as a form of slow death by exposure to the elements. The quickest way to be killed by Stalin was to do something nice for him. He killed you for KNOWING him.

All of these thoughts have been crystallized by an intriguing new book by Martin Amis called "Koba the Dread" (Talk Miramax, $24.95, 306 pp.). "Koba" was Stalin´s boyhood nickname, and Amis has immersed himself in the millions of pages written about "Iosif the Terrible" (Stalin admired Ivan the Terrible) in order to come to terms with the legacy of his father, the late novelist and poet Kingsley Amis, who was a Communist for 15 years before renouncing it and becoming a conservative. Martin Amis grew up surrounded by those same Writer´s Guild-type intellectuals in England--among them his friend Christopher Hitchens--who remained apologists for some form of Communism long after the system had been 100 per cent exposed in Solzhenitsyn´s "The Gulag Archipelago."

Amis asks some excellent questions. For example:

Why WAS Communism considered so funny? His subtitle is "Laughter and the Twenty Million"--the 20 million being the LOWEST possible number of people killed by Communism. It doesn´t include the widows and orphans of Communism, those mangled, maimed or driven insane, or those who simply died early from exhaustion or starvation. Why DID we laugh at Communism while treating the OTHER holocaust with such seriousness?

Amis doesn´t really answer this question, but I think I have an idea. We regarded the German atrocities as genocide--which they were--but we regarded the Russian atrocities as suicide. In a sense, it seemed like crazy people in the same family killing one another.

Of course it wasn´t that at all. It was a psychopath killing an entire nation that, paradoxically, adored him. In modern terms, it was a family where "intervention" was called for.

Which leads to another excellent question posed by Amis. After we saw what was really happening--and there was evidence of Bolshevik terrorism as early as 1920--how was Communism able to retain any intellectual cachet through all the following decades?

One fact will suffice to show how intellectually bankrupt these American and English Communists were. During the collectivization of farms in the late twenties and early thirties, the death toll from starvation among CHILDREN ALONE . . . was four million. It was starvation as government policy.

And yet the various Communist organizations that were born in the United States and England were mostly founded AFTER collectivization. Forget the Terror of 1937, the unholy pact with Hitler from 1939 to 1941, the execution of millions of Russian troops by order of their own generals (not to mention their use as human cannon fodder) in the Great Patriotic War, the concentration camps, the summary arrests and trials, the death upon death upon death until 1953, when Stalin finally died while planning a new purge--of Jews.

Forget all that, forget Stalin entirely, and focus instead on Lenin. Many western Communists called themselves Leninists. And yet Lenin advocated terror and carried it out. Amis documents the brutal atrocities that are notable for being so matter-of- fact, almost mundane--40 people shot on Thursday, 27 tortured on Friday, the Cheka going door to door every night to roust out innocents were considered obstacles, or simply because the party wanted their property. The only thing Lenin didn´t have, that Stalin did have, was time.

Now focus on Trotsky. The Trotskyites have always thought of themselves as the "cleanest" Communists. And yet Trotsky endorsed terror as well. The idea of some sort of prelapsarian Communist ideal that could be embraced apart from Stalin is pretty much dashed to shreds by Amis´ deep reading of the available evidence. There was never a time that Communism wasn´t based on violence-- and not just the revolutionary violence of throwing out the tsar. Violence was not just a weapon or a tool. It was a policy. It was sometimes used just to remind the people that it existed. Stalin killed people because he could.

Amis meanders a bit, and can be maddeningly self-indulgent about his personal reminiscences, but his marshalling of the damning evidence is fairly remarkable. It´s an indictment of Stalin, of course, but who cares about that? Stalin is dead. What we should care about is that it´s an indictment of those of us who treated Communism as a joke. They needed our flesh-and-blood attention, but the best among us were occupied with theory. We convened philosophy classes in the foyer of a death house.

dash of cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp. butter
1 small onion, chopped
3 c. water
1 pt. sour cream
2 heaping Tbsp. flour
1 Tsp Cesium isotopes


Directions:
Sprinkle chicken pieces with paprika, salt and pepper. Brown slowly in butter and bile; add onion and water. Cover and simmer until tender. Remove chicken; keep warm. Combine sour cream, cesium and flour ; stir in juices. Heat through, stirring constantly, until thickened. do not boil. Serve scorching hot over geneticaly modified chicken. Mutates 6-8 Humans. 2 1/2 c. flour
3 eggs

I would like to NOT eat Genetically modified foods but how the heck can you tell which products have them.

I only eat Kellogs raison Bran or granola as cereal but how am I to know if they use GM grains? I don´t eat much bread except homemade biscuits but how do I know if the flour I use is GM grain?

How is one to know.

We don´t eat much boxed foods as I cook mostly from scratch but when you think about it I could be opening that raw pack of chick to cook for dinner and letting bird flu into my home.

Sure I have the knowledge to be able to grow all my own food thresh the grain etc but I don´t have any land to do so.
