Police in McCandless removed about 150 guns from the one-bedroom apartment of man they went to check on last night.

Russell Liang, 57, remained at UPMC Mercy Hospital this afternoon, but faces several charges, including aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. His condition is not known.

McCandless police Chief Gary Anderson said officers got a call from someone requesting an ambulance to come the Presidential Arms apartment complex around 1 a.m. When they arrived, they found the door slightly ajar. Officers called out the name of the man inside but got no answer. They went in and found a man seated with an assault rifle in his hand.

"He cocked it in front of the officers," Anderson said. "Their safety was at risk."

The officers left and called Allegheny County police for help, and a SWAT team was dispatched. Authorities removed the man from the third-floor apartment just after 5 a.m. today.

Today, officers could be seen removing crates of weapons from the one-bedroom home in the Grant House building of the complex. Anderson said investigators would inventory the firearms and check to see if they were legally purchased.
