Anybody Know When The Final Blast From Supernova 1987A Is Due?
Quote

"10 years after it blew up, astronomers say that a high speed ripple of material from Supernova 1987A is colliding with a ring of gas that the star expelled thousands of years ago. The gas is expected to soon glow at thousands of degrees, causing a final burst of light that will be visable on earth in 2005."

Wow Trav! You definitely look different!damned

But WHEN in 2005? They must have an approximate date, otherwise, how would they have known the year?

And, any idea what to expect? Do you think this is something we will be able to see with the naked eye? Will it be visable during daylight?

Inquiring minds want to know!blobr

One thing I DO know is that last May there was a big conference about it in Jackson Hole, Wyoming - right about the time of all the Aussie Bloke presictions. I also know of a very secret conference that was held in the forests of Northern California several years ago - something about an īimpactī or īarrivalī - first wave expected in November 2004. Hmmmm... and you say NASA has pulled their info - the plot thickens!

Itīll take *years* for the Earth to be rendered completely lifeless.

Thank you for bringing Hiddenmeanings back in my life!!!

Yoehoe!!!

I did not remember the name and looked this week in google on this subject, looked also for Eta Carina but did not find hiddenmeanings and now it is here! Lost it one year ago.

But I found nothing recent either.

Surely somebody that calls themself "Star Gazer" would be able to look up things like this, and would also understand that it is no danger whatsoever to us?

Is it a GLP in-joke to use names that are the opposite of your personality? "Critical Thinker" is another one that comes to mind.

Uh? Stargazer is saying that we might see a little of it her. Sure she does not think then that it is a danger to us.

duhh, forgot put your glasses?

Re: Anybody Know When The Final Blast From Supernova 1987A Is Due?Quote

SN1987A is 170,000 light years away. The light from the explosion has been seen since 1987 meaning the super nova occured sometime around 168,000 B.C. Any materials cast out are moving at sub light speed and will not reach the earth for hundreds of thousands of years.
If you do a google on it there is tons of information on it.

lol I never said anything about danger or debris! And just because I love gazing at the stars doesnīt mean I claim to be an astronomer. 1rof1

Silly - I have searched and have found nothing more recent than about a year ago. If NASA is expecting it to light up this year, Iīm wondering when?

[link to space.rice.edu] watch the scopes, energy like that wouldnt have an effect on ccd at all, would energy like that collide with our stars output?

Thatīs what I want to know AC72! The only reference to the 2005 event comes from an unpublished NASA memo. You can see the scan of it on the Hidden Meanings link at the top of this post.

There have been supernovas that were visable to the naked eye and even in daylight. Iīm wondering if this is what they expect 1987A to do. That would be way cool!

Supernova 1987A reached its maximunm brightness in 1987 when the light from the explosion of a blue supergiant star in the Large Magellanic Cloud reached us.

What astronomers are expecting and waiting for is for the shock front of that explosion to slam into the cloud of gas and dust that was expelled earlier in the life of the star. Astronomers are waiting for this because it will give greater insight into the life and death of stars. It will not be visible to the unaided eye.

Yes, supernovae have occured that have been visible in daylight, but for that to happen, it has to occur in our own galaxy, not in one 170,000 light years away. Supernovae occur in our galaxy about once a century, but most (about 3 out of 4) are obscurred by intervening dust. The last daylight supernova was seen in the early 17th century (Keplerīs star). There was also one in the late 16th century that was seen by Keplerīs mentor Tycho Brahe. Another bright one was seen by the Chinese in 1054 AD. The remnant of that one is known as the Crab Nebula in Taurus.

Thanks Deacon. So when NASA says īvisable from earthī, they ment only visable with telescope. Darn!
