USGC 8.0 Earthquake Dominican Republic???
I receive breaking news texts from CNN, and I got one about an hour ago from the USGC. It read: USGC reports preliminary 8.0 quake centered 130 miles northeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

I have been on the USGC site, as well as major news networks, and there has been no indication of this quake.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

I just read this info on another forum. I have checked all the earthquake info I have listed and nothing is showing up for me. Strange isn't it?

I received this as a SMS txt on my cell phone at 7:38 pm central time from the USGS. Jumped on the USGS website and never did actually see it listed there. I never got a revised txt that they downgraded the quake. Just a bit odd.

Maybe someone was working in the area and bumped the sensor, causing an automated alert to be generated, which was removed as soon as they noticed they screwed up?

Well, scroll down and take a look at the focus of the quakes on the 1st.

It's predominantly Virgin Islands [very shakey that day], Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

This was big.

It shook the whole globe.

See link: Live Internet Seismic Server [link to aslwww.cr.usgs.gov]

Check time values relative to seismogram locations.

Note the stress was almost instantaneous in various global seismographic locations!

Those graphs are telling, Split-Dirt!

I got two USGS notices on the 8.0 Dominican quake. The second one said the first notice was deleted. I didn't save it so I can't post it for this forum.

Kind of a BIG mistake, methinks. But those graphs...

From another EQ list:

"it was an error - they sent out a delete notice as well - there was an apology posted somewhere - it said:

<<<Users of the USGS Earthquake Notification System received a message reporting a magnitude 8.0 earthquake near the Dominican Republic. This was a mistake. In an effort to increase our ability to detect smaller earthquakes in the Caribbean region following the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, the USGS began accepting earthquake locations and magnitudes from additional sources in the region. The message reporting a magnitude 8.0 earthquake near the Dominican Republic was incorrect and resulted in the distribution of the errant e-mail. We acknowledge this was a serious mistake and have issued a correction. >>>"

What is needed is a number of independent seismic activity sources so we can have a more reliable collection of data on earthquakes.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 933205

I guess what you really mean is to *correlate* independent seismic activity sources so we can have ...

Just thoughtlessly adding them up, as they did initially, is what caused this whole false positive.
Windows Live Alerts also reported this earthquake:

"USGC reports preliminary 8.0 quake centered 130 miles northeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic" (note misspelling of *USGS*)

but as of today the USGS shows no such "animal" in their table.

To me, looks like a recycled alert from the Haiti quake, with typos, and then sent through the Dominican Republic seismic reporting network.

I hope USGS learn their lesson to not blindly trust any sources not controlled by them.
