WTF????? Digital alarm clock running 35 minutes fast!!!
hi all...

this is a little out there, but after all this is GLP, right?

we have a digital alarm clock that has been speeding up. to me this is super strange out of a device with no moving parts...only circuitry. it started out as 9 or 10 minutes fast then 15, then 20 and it's now 35 minutes fast.

i'm wondering if this could have anything to do with any of the things that have been discussed here recently, magnetic ribbons and the like?

actually, i just looked at it and it's 50 mins. fast now!!

this is kind of freakin' me out.

anyone have any thoughts?

we're not having any trouble with the other digital clocks in the house, just that one.

How old is the clock?

I had a 10+ year old one that would always run fast.

How the fuck can a digital alarm lock be fast or slow, they would count based on cycles per second of alternating current, or probably have some kind of timer IC built in them.

I would bet they are the most accurate time peices in anybodies house unless they have a certified chronometer.

Yall say some crazy shit sometimes.

Yeah, thats all i can think of, some kind of oxidation of parts of the circuit creating different resistance conditions which may affect how it computes the time.

Electronic circuits are generally very accurate time peices in comparison to traditional clocks.

My mincrowave clock does the same thing. No matter how many times I set it to match the other clocks, it always ends up being minutes ahead of them. Strange indeed.

I had same issue with my clock. Actually what happens most mains powered clocks derive their time form the 50Hz mains which remains accurate over a long time period. So I think your clocks is having noise on the mains that is causing extra pulses. I think you should try to add good mains filter to the clock or have a clock that does not have 50Hz mains.

Re: WTF????? Digital alarm clock running 35 minutes fast!!!
Yes I agree, most likely answer..Cheap electronics VERY often are made cheap by omitting or downsizing components in filter circuits. Now are the capacitors drying out making your clock more sensitive to noise always present OR ARE PROTON EMISSIONS from the sun increasingly striking the power lines inducing larger and larger pulses of current as the rate of hits climbs? I believe the common way of "grabbing" a clock pulse from the 60hz US mains does so at the ZERO crossing of the waveform, this is the quiet period you might say between the positive and negative peaks of the 120V, So if noise occurs while the line voltage is at zero and is large enough it could prematurely trigger a count, maybe multiples but the time window seems to narrow to add up to 35min error in a short period. Perhaps positive spikes during the negative phase could also trigger it, but the noise would need to be larger than the line voltage at that point in the cycle.

The reason i looked at this post OP was than a too noticed some strange clock error lately, And my one quartz clock left in the house clued me. I wrote it off at my house as CMOS backup battery in the PC might be getting weak and the same with the battery in the quartz clock...Now ???

Also HAS ANONE NOTICED FM RADIO STATIONS locking onto stations 0.1MHZ higher than normal? ex: 92.6 when the station is known to be 92.5

I have been noticing this when seeking to the next station, whats even more strange is that the reception is stronger but not in stereo when i correct the tuning.. It's as if one of the constants of the universe has or is shifting and only now has become large enough to shift frequency standards in common radios??? Perhaps why the PUSH to digital transmissions!!!

Re: WTF????? Digital alarm clock running 35 minutes fast!!!
The answer is that you are using a 50Hz alarm clock on a 60Hz frequency circuit. If the clock supports both 50 and 60Hz, you may want to check for a switch somewhere on the clock that will change it from 50 -> 60Hz.

Otherwise, if that clock does not support 60Hz, you will need to replace it with one that does.

Quartz crystal circuits are tuned to a specific frequency so that it can count the proper number of crystal vibrations to accurately keep time. 50Hz/60Hz clocks have *two* separate circuits that count vibrations according to that frequency.
