Do not leave a whole clove too long on the gum, it will start eating the tissues.

Cloves kick ass. Good for repelling ants in the house as well. One can make a water infusion of cloves and use is as a mouth rinse in ones oral hygiene routine as well, wonderful, antioxidant w/ a high ORAC score.

The best source I know of for high quality essential oils for a reasonable price is San Francisco Herb Co. They sell them in one ounce bottles. They have clovebud oil and also oregano oil, among others.

For an emergency, if clovebud oil works to kill tooth pain, go for it, but I would only use it for a short period of time, until you can get to a dentist (ASAP!). It can cause skin reactions for sure, so you could probably get sensitized to it so that you couldn't use it again.

You should never put clove oil on your skin even if it's diluted. Same with cassia (cinnamon) oil. They are too strong and cause sensitization and reactions.

It sure smells good though.

I've used the kind of clove you buy in the spice section


take a coffee filter, cut it to a circle (or square) about palm sized, take a pinch of clove, put it in the coffee filter, wrap it up and get it a little wet with warm water
press it between your cheek *or lip i guess* and the painful tooth

feels much better



edit: i've also been told it helps draw out infection

A similar holy crap type thing I found is Cola Syrup for nausea. You'll find it at drugstores, sometimes behind the counter. It is under $5, yet it works 100x better than chemical substitutes, and it stores well. The best part is that it works unbelievably fast. Fantastic stuff!

yea clove oil is the best stuff in the world, only thing that has ever worked for me, after about 3 uses pain was gone forever, miracle drug.

Just printed the ehow and put a copy of it my book "Where There Is No Dentist" for emergency use.

If clove oil is an essential oil, the shelf life should be at least two years. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I once had a toothache so bad and all I had was the clove buds. So I smashed them up in the middle of the night and rubbed the grains all over my gums in desperation. Tooth pain is the worst! (Well, next to burns, I suppose)
