What if... aliens came to the most powerful nations and said "Hey y'all... you guys are fairly intelligent. What's with the war? Why do you let your brother starve in the street, while you throw away enough leftovers to feed them 4 times over? We'd love to show you the universe... there is much to do, much to learn, and many fantastic sights to see. The only problem is that you don't seem to be able to take care of yourselves very well. Get your shit together, and you're in! We won't deal with a divided house though."
So... they can't just tell us "Hey! We want to see other planets, so you all have to change overnight!" They have to do it slowly... get us acclimatized to the technologies and ways of thought that we will need to be accepted by the galactic community. Also, we need one representative, not 195... somehow, they have to convince us that integration is in our best interest. How? Catastrophe is probably the only way the US will ever accept it.
It may be that there is some grand sweeping plan to create a one world government, but you guys don't really have any evidence that this conspiracy doesn't hold the best interests of mankind as its motivating factor. What if they're the good guys and you're the bad guys?
