NASA Scrambles To Fix ISS Cooling System
President Obama To Visit Space Coast Thursday

POSTED: 6:28 am EDT April 14, 2010
UPDATED: 6:56 am EDT April 14, 2010

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA is scrambling Wednesday to find a fix for a major problem on board the International Space Station.

The cooling system the astronauts just installed does not work.

If crews don't fix it by the end of their mission, the ISS could overheat forcing them to shut down most electronics.

Also Wednesday, the Space Coast getting ready for President Barack Obama visit Thursday.

He will announce his future plans for NASA which include creating 2,500 jobs and increasing NASA's budget by $6 billion.

The President also wants NASA to build a new space ship called Orion, similar to the Apollo capsule. And he will direct NASA to build a heavy-lift rocket for carrying large payloads for deep-space exploration.

President Obama arrives at the Space Coast early Thursday afternoon.

All this comes just as the Shuttle program is retiring. There are only three shuttle launches remaining.

ISS oxygen generator down
Apr 14, 2010 15:17

The crew of the International Space Station are struggling to fix a faulty oxygen generator on the Russian segment of the ISS. Russian and American space officials say the men and women on board have a sufficient supply of oxygen from similar generators on the American segment and on the US space shuttle Discovery, which docked with the ISS a week ago.

sounds like they are experiencing multiple failures - I guess the shuttle is stuck there until they fix the oxygen generator

Re: BRKG TWITTER: NASA is scrambling to fix a major problem with the cooling system on the International Space Station.
Mission specialists Rick Mastracchio and Clay Anderson completed a three-spacewalk effort to install a fresh coolant tank outside the station and ready an empty one for the journey home, work that again required wrestling with sticky bolts before success could be declared.

But after all their effort, ground controllers couldn't activate the new ammonia supply right away because a valve remained stuck closed in a nitrogen tank that pressurizes the coolant system.

Mission managers continued to troubleshoot the issue after the 13 shuttle and station crew members went to sleep around 3 p.m., but said arranging a spacewalk to swap out a faulty nitrogen tank with a spare would be a last resort if the problem persisted.

"We do have a couple of tricks up our sleeve that, once folks finalize those plans, we'll attempt to see if that will fix the problem short of (a spacewalk)," said Ron Spencer, the mission's lead station flight director.

The concern is that the coolant loop serving the station's starboard side might need to be shut down when the complex enters orbits where the sun's angle keeps parts of it extremely hot or cold for extended periods.

The coolant system couldn't compensate for the ammonia's expansion and contraction at some temperatures without proper pressurization by the nitrogen lines.

A station operating with half its normal power might not be able to sustain a full crew of six, depending how long that condition lasted. And scheduling a spacewalk would be disruptive to both station and shuttle crews, including one targeted to launch aboard Atlantis on May 14.

NASA still struggling with stuck valve in space station cooling loop, can't get it open. Flight controllers tried twice Wednesday to open the nitrogen valve by remote control, but were unsuccessful. NASA is debating the next step.
