Quoting: Anonymous Coward 538386(Running XP Pro and Mac OSX inside virtual machine on my Linux workstation) Yeah, I'm just now learning about VM. Heard about it a few years ago to run BackTrack 3 just never got around to it. Now I'm finally Starting to learn the Ubuntu distro and it's not as hard as I imagined. Another interesting thing is a Hackintosh, but that's a horse of another color. |
| Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 944219 04/15/2010 09:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I would have bought a mac last time if they were a bit cheaper. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 925443If i were here to sell you a mac i would but im not on the payroll so ill tell you how i feel unfortunatly there is truth behind macs and gaming. Gaming sucks on macs no doubt about it. And im a big gamer, there are other things that are irritating, "it just works is the catchphrase" well let me tell you some things are a pain in the ass like just trying to get the drivers for a windows based printer to work properly... Looking past the minor flaws i can honestly say i like the operating system better. Its just clean, like your computer is wearing a condom, yeah you miss out on some of the feeling (games) but at least your member stays clean |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 944219Not quite accurate there. Macs are just as easy to infect as a well-safeguarded PC, and for that matter Linux....but the lack of market share is what drives hackers to write viruses only for Windows. It has nothing to do with security of the OS. FYI, before switching to Linux, I ran a Windows-based system for years without a single virus. It just takes a little intelligent thought ahead of time, that's all. |

Quoting: Leviticus 942370I want to run Linux for a different purpose entirely I switched mainly because I didn't want to shell out money for a new XP 64-bit OS, and I wanted to the stability that Linux provides. I am running Ubuntu Studio at this very moment because of some graphics projects I have going, but once those clear up, I am straight to Gentoo, for the power increase :) At this point, especially with having XP and OSX inside Virtualbox, there is just no need to bother with the old debate anymore. With a little thought, you can have all the OS's (I've even been running Android OS just for fun lol). |
| Leviticus User ID: 942370 04/15/2010 10:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll let you guys on a little secret, oh okay it's not secrtet, just relatively not known and not for the light-hearted. Mac started using Intel prossecers in 1996. To make a long story short after a lot of work and kernel debugging and creating drivers, people can now run Mac on their Windows machines. It's known as Tiger OS. There are plenty of machines this isn't compatible with or drivers of course are still in development for example for some wireless cards (use usb network adapter if that's the case) but it does work on certain brands better that others. For some reason Toshiba laptops are some of the easiest to turn into a hackintosh. There is a dedicated community out there and apple can't stand these guys. Just thought it was interesting. That is all. |

Get bored with the interface just change it with a little work |

Does Grub handle it or are you using Lilo? |

It's a little goofy, but it's great for an old computer Nope, hadn't heard of that one. Used to use Crux and liked that a lot for servers. I've used damn small linux on a flash stick and that comes in handy on a sick computer because it has real disk tools unlike windows today. I'll give Poppy a try, as long as it isn't one of those old floppy distros. |

I've never used it for a base OS, but I have virtualized it. I actually presented it as one of a few Linux options to our receptionist at work who is thinking of switching. It's definitely very nice looking. Re: the Macbook Pro, you should still be under warranty, wouldn't you? It sounds like maybe something is wrong with it? Re: Gentoo....I have managed to install it on a VM, but never natively (haven't had time). The idea of compiling my own software really appeals to me though, since I am obsessed with maximizing my comp's power whenever possible. |

| crazypants User ID: 709330 04/15/2010 10:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i'm with you, OP. a mac is superior to a pc, most of the time. but really, its windows, that is the problem.windows is a bloated mess. its all a scam to get you to buy a new computer every year or two. i prefer a mac because if you know how to fix/upgrade them yourself, you can get MANY years out of them. and apple uses better quality parts. i don't know if they still do, been awhile since i have bought anything new, but they used to. |

| Tazzz !#%&&(^#%@*! User ID: 836793 04/15/2010 10:58 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I must admit, even though I love my mac and its simplicity and ease of use... I have an old E-machine tower was in the shed we just did spring cleaning, and I decided to load it with Ubuntu. I figured out how to do the 3D desktop, and the graphics surprised me. I find it over all more clumsy than OS X, but its by far COOLER in functionality and practical use... Still not fucking windows though, I have one Microsoft product in this house, its an old Xbox classic and I deleted the Console APP from it, stripped all the programming completely out and it runs XBMC and some Python scripts, so its really NOT microsoft any more. lol. otherwise if it was, it wouldnt have a snowball's chance in hell of seeing my shared iTunes library and thats really all I use it for. |
