The problem of efficient feces disposal existed since the times when people started to live in permanent settlements, primarily for the reasons of cleanliness and odor. Toilets were known in ancient India (dated as early as 2,500 BCE), in Ancient Rome, Egypt and China. Over time it has become clear that the disposal of feces is an issue of hygiene, since feces contribute to spreading of diseases and intestinal parasites. It is a matter of attention and education in developing countries. Until about the end of the 19th century, the primary concern of sewage collection and disposal was to remove waste away from inhabited places, and it was common to use waterflows and larger bodies of water as a destination of sewage, where waste could be naturally dissipated and neutralized. With the increased population density this is no longer a viable solution, and special processing of sewage is required. The lack of the latter is a grave sanitary problem in developing countries. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 660494Its almost like the glossy travel shows purposely hide this stuff in case it makes us ill and we refuse to buy goods from these countries again. Again? I buy locally grown fruit and veg and local dairy..and local meat..it isnt hard to do in fact its cheaper and more eco.....the only thing in my house from india is a table cover a friend gave me. |

One idea would be to get rid of SEWERS entirely and invest in a more localised 'drying' or 'chemical' or 'laser' disposal method for such. Quoting: Free Planet 941667All seven billion civilians DESERVE at least these basic amenities on Free Planet. And yeah, you press the laser button AFTER you've finished ... ;) I have solved the problem for you ... what you need to do is make hydrogen by elctrolysing the sewage water - no need to add chemicals and you get three products oxygen hydrogen and the dessicant that you can sell as fertiliser. simple clean and perfect |

| DuvetCover User ID: 948153 04/20/2010 05:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Over the last 10 years I have spent 3 in India, mainly travelling. If you haven't been there you wouldn't believe how beautiful and disgusting it is, both at the same time. I always think of it as a rubbish dump with a turd on top. Don't get me wrong, I really like the place, and have had nothing but great experiences there. The cities are bad, I cried like a baby the first time I went to Mumbai. Having lived a sheltered life in the UK it was a shock. When I left, I swore I would never complain about anything ever again. Last year I met an Isreali couple who had just flown into Delhi at the start of their honeymoon, they were flying back to isreal the next day, because they couldn't take it, I tried to convince them to tough it out, but they couldn't do it. I recommend everyone to give it a go it's a real eye opener, if you think things are tough in the "1st world", you ain't seen shit!!!!! (no pun intended) What amazes me most is that I have never been sick in all the time I've spent there. When you can get one, go book a flight you will never regret it. Best advice - take your own pillow!!! Hari Om!! Last Edited by DuvetCover on 04/20/2010 05:38 AM |

Best advice - take your own pillow!!! Hari Om!! OMG I feel bad for anyone landing in delhi with no one to meet them. Don't start india with delhi - it's chaotic madness. same with mumbai. I'd start with somewhere easy like Hyderabad or Goa, go to Jaipur and Jodhpur, Rhajastan and if you can go to Kajuraho. Agra is not so bad - bit of a tourist trap - but you can't miss the Taj Mahal. delhi, mumbai and chennai are not my idea of honeymoon cities! and don't forget your typhus shot. |

Private bathroom and Toilet: By 2800 BCE, private bathrooms, located on the ground floor, were found in nearly all the houses of the Indus Valley Civilization.[107] The pottery pipes in walls allowed drainage of water and there was, in some case, provision of a crib for sitting.[107] The Indus Valley Civilization had some of the most advanced private lavatories in the world.[107] "Western-style" toilets were made from bricks using toilet seats made of wood on top.[107] The waste was then transmitted to drainage systems. My husband worked for a short while at a company that hired mexican immigrants and yes most were illegal. They were eventually busted. My husband said that the bathroom that was for the workers had working plumbing. Yet, THEY WOULD NOT FLUSH. After months of daily cleaning of overflowing WORKING toilets, the boss finally ripped out the toilets all together and just left the open sewer pipes. They would go in with a hose once a day and lets it run down the pipe for a few minutes. It actually eliminated the problem |
