Brightest star in the western sky right now?
Anyone know what the brightest star in the western sky is in the northern hemisphere, right now? In MI, and never seen a star, that low, that bright...

I don't know. I'm not even an amateur astronomer. If it wasn't hovering in roughly the same position, I would have said it was airplane lights.

I was outside smoking, and in the 5-7 minutes I was out there, it just barely dipped behind a treeline.

Oh well, who knows.

5a

In MI also and saw the exact same star and had the same reaction. Really low on the horizon about 5 oclock in relation to the crescent moon. It did not appear to be moving although there were commercial jets flying well below it.

Venus is low in the western sky these days and extremely bright (-3.8). That would be my educated guess.

+1 Great program.

By the looks of what you described, Northern Hemisphere, low in the west dipping below tree line, it's probably either Sirius or Rigel.

The planet Venus. Sirius and the other stars do not compare with its brightness.

Here it was last year when it was the morning star, seen with the waning crescent moon:

Re: Brightest star in the western sky right now?
The Brightest Star is still Sirius. Jupiter ought to still be up, Venus set a couple of hours ago. Mars should be visible in the eastern sky as a little yellow star that does not blink. Mars will ascend to be overhead around 1:30am.

It's the planet Venus. Sirius is next, which is a star much higher in the sky. Great site is: space.about.com/od/stars/tp/brighteststars.htm

That would be venus and jupiter. I've also been seeing this bright star, and seeing as I do know how to find venus, I can assuredly tell you its not venus. In fact I first saw it moments after admiring venus's and jupiters beauty.

There is a really good free program that will help anyone out with figuring out what stars, or planets or satellites you might be seeing.
It's called Stellarium.

So where is your other object inrelation to Venus and Jupiter? East or west? Higher or lower? Near them or the other side of the sky? What colour is it? How bright is it?

Without a better description it could be any bright star, or possibly Mars or Saturn, which are both also visible during the night.

As already mentioned, get a copy of Stellarium and you can figure it out for yourself.

It's laughable that these threads keep popping up.
I think that people have become so doomed conscious, that anything that seems not normal in there eyes is a disaster waiting to happen.

I can guarantee you 100% that it's venus without doubt.

It's laughable in some ways, this perpetual cult of doom at GLP. In other ways it's quite sad.

Sad that people are so out of touch with the skies and how the stars and planets move, that they have no idea what they're seeing.

And sad that they seem to lack any common sense or the ability to do some basic research to find out what they're looking at. We have incredible resources available nowadays, with computes, smart phoens, the internet, but still they come and post on GLP, wondering if it's some doom from the skies. (And they can't even sem to find the search box on GLP to see if anybody's asked teh same question.)

Sometimes I despair at the rising tide of ignorance and apathy...

It is a lens flare caused by a Chinese lantern passing through the swamp gas coming from Uranus.
