The RIAA is the Recording Industry Association of America.

Essentially they "represent" the recording industry distributors in the US. The RIAA is made up of record lables (very important to know this) as well as distributors (remember the rack jabbers?)

This isn't exactly new for them. In the past, SONY was caught putting a root-kit on compact discs of certain artists that would essentially install itself onto your computer if you ever played them on it. (Sony BMG is a big player in the RIAA)
