Situation:

A young 17 year old girl catches a painful case of herpes, and is counseled over the phone by the state as a mandatory protocol for minors contracting herpes.

This is a bad bad case of herpes, she feels like she is rotting away. She shoves a towel into her mouth and screams as she pees.

She tells her parents what has happened, and her parents audibly cry in the kitchen... surely they are heartbroken that their daughter will never find love because of her disgusting disease.

Then... years start to pass. The girl finds that herpes has never reared its ugly head a second time.

Girl looks up herpes, and learns that herpes is NOT contagious unless there are symptoms. If there are no symptoms, there is no spread.

Girl looks further into herpes, and learns that by the age of 40, 90% of adults have contracted some form of herpes, typically oral cold sores.

Girl looks further, and learns that genital herpes is the same disease as oral herpes... the only difference is the location.

So, this girl lives many more years, and NEVER has another outbreak of herpes.

Should she call herself infected with a disease if the disease never troubles her, never shows any symptoms, and is not contageous in any way?

Seems to me - this girl is disease free.
