If you think of a pebble on a stream smooth floor, these are similar to the "ripples" you see associated to that pabble. Its a quite common occurance, is is virtually always associated with mountain ranges, and increasing air speeds with increasing altitudes. The cloud is simply ware vapour "condensing" as it reaches the dewpoint at that level/ temperature. Hope that helps. |

Australia also has several sites where they are common. |

Just saying Oh, Was watching the 6:15 local weather report on 33 out of Dallas, the weather guy kinda freaked for a few seconds while doing his skit. He had a live shot of the dallas sky-line up and at first didnt see it was a blimp showing,he was freakin somewhat. just had to see it...LOL |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 944501 04/20/2010 01:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | sounds like your weather man should brush up a bit on his knowledge base, simple stuff. Those lenticulars over eyjafjallajokull, its not easy, but if I was asked, Id probably expect to see a reasomably strong Jetstream working at altitude there. Should the ash get into that, then it will travel and spread very quickly and over quite great distances, but its got to get into it first, and with the ground winds there that seem so strong thats probably not going to happen. Dont panic. |

If all else is moving off, good sense says these that are still and sculted almost smooth are using something to stay in place, like intelligent control. After getting footage for a few years daily, it seems that these objects like to hang out over highway intersections, smoky places, etc. Maybe they use it to help cloak them. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 948074 04/20/2010 02:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Has everyone noticed the strange oval/circular clouds formations that have stayed above the volcano? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 934777[link to eldgos.mila.is] Thats pretty neat. Since the wind is blowing everything off to the right(and should be blowing any water vapor off to the right as well) at a fairly good clip, then what is causing this cloud formation high above the volcano? Thats the mothership of all the small ufos we are seeing thats not a volcano its the motherships exhaust fumes, now we know eh. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 944501 04/20/2010 03:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | guys, sorry to burst your bubble, but these clouds are just that...clouds. They are lenticular clouds, otherwise known as "standing wave" clouds. They are constantly forming at the leading edge that you see, and constantly dissipating on the trail;ing edge, all related to the air travelling upwards from being deflected by a mountain (range), which also doesent move. Ive flown right up against them, to the point where I could bury one wingtip into the cloud, the lift on the front edge of them if like riding in a lift...smooooth...but on the back side, where the air is travelling downwards, it's violent. There are many stories of glider pilots that havent strapped themselves in tight enough and when they have flown through the "rotor", thats what its called, theyve actually punched their heads right through the top of their canopy. Another thing that you see when you are there is a perfectly circular rainbow on thew cloud surface, with a silloette of your aircraft, dead center in it. Its a photo that I always wanted to get, but never could and Im also not aware af anyone that has, though many have tried. So... Sorry, but this is a perfectly natural occurance, Im lucky to have been there "up close and personal" on many occasions, its an amazing experience, very serene. |
