According to an anthropology class I took that analyzed Star Trek, Spock represented pure logic, McCoy represented pure emotions and Kirk represented the desired blend of both.

The other way around
Jim could not produce his BC so he was put into command.
Spock had his in hand and was turned down.Isn't that the way the system works now a days?

he was impartial and rode the middle ground, cleaving to cool blue logic and unemotional assessment, which made him a first rate advisor to a leader.

leaders are nothing without good advisors.

but a good leader tends to be more fiery and an extremist, with extremely strong convictions, which is why Kirk made a great Captain.

remember the kobiashi (sp?) maru? (even in the orig series as well as the most recent movie)
It took Kirk basically cheatng to beat the test. (which Spock designed)

Re: How come Dr. Spock was only 2nd in Comand when he was clearly the strongest and most intelligent crew member?
In the Enterprise Series we get a whole new insight into the Vulcan Culture, we see that Star Fleet is a human invention, we find that while Vulcan's were present, they were not part of Star Fleet, but they were a force to reckon with. T'pol (First Officer of Archer's Enterprise) is still a member of Vulcan High Command and her roll is defined by the needs of VC to 'control' or guide human progress into space.

From that we can see a future Spock also being pressed by a less obvious Vulcan High Command to help in guiding human exploration of space in the capacity of First Officer, having vast powers aboard the ship while still allowing humans to make a few mistakes and learn from those mistakes as they progress.

In a way Vulcan's are our 'teachers' in the future. They present themselves and give us the virtue of their experience in space and dealing with various other cultures. While at first they halt our progress, preventing us from launching a full attack on the universe (Thus Archer's Father being kept from Warp 5 Tech and the enterprise being built and flown so far down the road from the first warp journey), Later they give us more and more reign.

T'pol 'broke' the barrier and present us with the notion of a logical Vulcan as a Star Fleet participant. Spock later is a star fleet officer who's mixed culture gives him better insight into human nature.

Off topic for a second.

I used to love in TNG how Riker used to get offered his own ship all the freaking time, but he'd turn it down again and again.

You just knew he was waiting for Picard to croak so he could get his hands on the Enterprise... I bet he was creaming his pants when the Borg kidnapped old baldy.

How come?

Because Spock couldn't lie. He could only tell the truth.

That's a serious barrier to getting into positions of power.

Ask Barry.
