You could have just sent a computer if you put Spock in charge!! We needed good old US leadership with the right balance of strength, emotion, intelligence and secret agent cunning to be captan of the "Enterprise"  and the wherewithal to shoot diamonds into the heart of a reptillian! Kirk had less logic and more balls.
