Iceland Volcano Update: Eyjafjallajokull Causes Mt. Katla to Erupt

They are threaten by the near volcano which is Mt. Katla. Mt. Katla have been seen with small eruptions during the last few hours. Scientists thought that if Katla would erupt, it would be much worse than Eyjafjallajokull and more devastating. Based on its history, Katla is more active than Eyjafjallajokull which only erupted three times by the past 1,000 years.

Thanks for the update.

We'll have to keep an eye on this one. So far there's nothing on google about it, and John Seache's volcano website hasn't yet reported it. [link to www.volcanolive.com]

from google news yesterday
(selected paragrahs)

Katla showed no signs of activity Tuesday, according to scientists who monitor it with seismic sensors, but they were still wary.

So far there have been minor tremors at Katla, which scientists believe to be movements in the glacier ice, but the activity from Eyjafjallajokull is making measurements more difficult to read and an eruption more tricky to predict.

"It is more difficult to see inside Katla," said Kristin Vogfjord, geologist at the Icelandic Met Office.

Her team of geophysicists, based in the capital of Reykjavik, use seismometers and GPS units planted around volcanoes to monitor quakes and the swelling of the land, which can indicate magma reservoirs that are pushing up through the crust. The area around Eyjafjallajokull rose up as much as 3 inches (8 centimeters) in recent months and then contracted slightly following the latest eruption.

Vogfjord says Katla's sensitivity to eruptions at Eyjafjallajokull may have to do with pressure shifts in the Earth's crust that are caused by an eruption's magma flow.

here is the chart on the seismic stations

use this map to see the seismographs locations

even so, it is very difficult to locate the sources of the tremors (which volcano they come from).

The president of Iceland yesterday warned that a second "much bigger" volcano is set to erupt and could spark further chaos.

President Olafur Grimsson fears if the second volcano, Katla, blows, it could have devastating consequences worldwide.

Mr Grimsson admitted: "Katla is much bigger and usually erupts once a century. The last one was in 1918 so we have been waiting for some years."

Katla is east of the smaller Eyjafjallajokull volcano which sparked the ash cloud and in the past has triggered subsequent eruptions from the Katla volcano.

Mr Grimsson added: "We have emergency plans in our own country, so I think that it's high time for European governments and airline authorities to start planning."

of course it's going to erupt.

too soon?

I think it’s too soon to make jokes about the Icelandic volcano…we should at least wait until the dust settles.

Dear Iceland, We said send cash, not ash.

Yeah well, the problem is, he's got nothing to go on other than history. While it may be true that Katla has erupted in the past following the other one, right now there is nothing indicating Katla's about to blow. Look at this:

[link to hraun.vedur.is]

No earthquakes at Katla. No earthquakes= no volcano eruption. Now when start seeing harmonic tremors at Katla, then it's time to worry. But so far, this is nothing but hearsay.

Re: Iceland Volcano Update: Eyjafjallajokull Causes Mt. Katla to Erupt
total BS
who the hell is the president to want to make a prediction. He is only making a fool of himself like Bush did many times over.
How many times yellowstone was predicted to blow by experts in the last 5 years?
Anyone remember?

Point is that no human being has the ability to predict what nature will do. All guess work and no one so far has got it right.
Many claims but no one has got it right.
This eruption was never predicted by scientists.
BTW, how many of them claimed Etna was going to blow in the last 10 years.
What about the big quake in SF?
