There is a really good source for the information you seek :)
Try www.INgunowners.com

That said.I would say any self respecting fire arm owner needs 5.
1.10-22 (target practice,small game,to a less degree self defense,cheap to shoot).

2.Remington 870 12 gauge,or Mossberg 500a.Shotguns are versatile and can be used for hunting or close range defense.

3.Pistol I personally love the Beretta 92fs.Reliable and useful. Others think you need a 45...if you go that route get a Kimber.

4.Assault rifle. I love the AK-47. It is very reliable, and accurate enough out to 400 yards. That said I also own a few ARs.If I could only have one,it would be an ak.

5.Long range/large game. I would go with a 700 in 270 Winchester.Others will argue 308 only because "the military uses it"...they do not understand ballistics of the 270 win kick the crap out of a 308 in ft pounds on target out to 800 yards. If you want to punch paper get a 308,if you want to hunt get a 270 win. With a 270 you can take any game in north America with rounds from 90 grain to 180 solids.
My 2 cents.

.45acp

Good, common round with plenty of stopping power. I use a 1911 with ambi-safety because I'm a lefty. Be careful with all the new fancy plastic 45s. They're wildly popular but the composite frame needs replacing sooner than a heavier all-steel pistol.

The 1911 is a good, thin gun that conceals well. I carry open and CC. If you get a striped down version of the 1911, make sure you can get a little play in the slide - it was designed loose to chew through dirt and mud. Tighter slides jam easier.

Do not get a Baby Desert Eagle in .45acp. They suck amazing shit.

I really like the 1911 .45 from what I have seen and heard. Thanks for pointing out about the slide play, is there a way to know from one gun to the next when shopping on line if it's going to be too tight or not??
 Quoting: Carbon Boy

Most of your Kimbers are constructed to exacting specs that are made to be precision. Certainly, Kimber is a good gun for match or target plinking, but the slide play is non-existent.

The Springfield 1911 is a gun-by-gun test. Avoid the composite frame. I have an STI Legacy which is advertised to be the closest replication of the original "sloppy" design. A bit expensive though, but not as expensive as tighter 1911s. I think mine was $1700. A Springfield 1911 is less than $600.

Both are great choices.

I recommend the 45acp in this thread because you really should have a gun you can CC. Most other posters have recommended assault rifles.

Aside from CC, as far as rifles go, there are a couple considerations. Some say .223. Forget 223. If you're going with an assault round, get a gun that chambers 308. The .223 won't penetrate most modern body armor. The 308 will.

Also, if desiring a gun that might be the last on the list to be banned, avoid the "black guns" commonly mis-referred to in the media as assault rifles. Get yourself a lever-action gun. The Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 will kill a car.

For a rapid firing good round, you might also consider the Chinese SKS in 7.62X39. Cheap, effective, and deadly.

The key to us GLPers should be to have rounds capable of penetrating body armor typically worn by the "home invaders" that hide their criminality behind paper and badges.
When blacks have identity it is called pride.
When indians have identity it is called culture.
When jews have identity it is called history.
When WHITES have identity it is called Racism.

I'd go with either the AK, Or the Mini 14, you don't really need both, as they both fill the same niche.

Substitute one for a higher powered bolt action hunting rifle, or a .22 rifle.

A .22 rifle will help you survive with small game and isn't half bad as a sniper rifle under 100 yds. Get bricks of ammo...500 each for under 20 bucks. Also...the so called enemy will be less apt to hear you three miles away.

Re: -=What is your preferred firearm?? Im shopping=-
I am looking around at different firearms and thought with the variety of people here, I might land an educated suggestion as to what would work best for me.

I don't own any guns at the moment, but did have a Ruger P89 several years ago, along with a Hi-point 9mm carbine. I really like the POF rifles, particularly the .223 but I don't have that kind of money. A in-law suggested an AK-47 for reliability and stopping power. I'm also aware that I need something that has wide ammo availability like a .223, or 7.62/.308.

I am trying to get educated, but there is a lot of information out there, and I'm having trouble finding where to start.

Im 6' about 230 and have large hands so I want something with a substantial grip, I think. I don't know exactly what the deal is with the barrel length.
 Quoting: Carbon Boy

I own several handguns, both revolvers and semi-auto's as well as several rifles. My favorite handgun is the Desert Eagle .50 cal. Its got the least recoil of any of the big boomers and weighs only 4lbs empty. It has incredible stopping power. It will put a hole in the block of a flat head V8 Engine. The only drawback is the ammunition is a bit spendy (around $25 for a box of 20 rounds). However as a defensive weapon, you won't need many rounds. Anyone shot with this weapon does not get up, plain and simple.

As far as rifles go, I have several favorites in my collection. First and foremost is a 7mm x 65 Swiss. Ammunition can be hard to find, but its is highly accurate at long distances. For close-in defense, I have several thoughts. The civilian version of the M-16, an AR-15 (a .223 cal) is a decent semi-auto, but is expensive, around $1500 (used) if u are lucky. For the money and stopping power, I would have to go with a Mini-14. It is available in a variety of styles from ranch/varmit to assault style. Larger clips are available if you know where to look, best of all, its a good all around rugged gun that is not prone to jamming as the AR-15 can be. Ammunition is cheap, but it is a light round.

S&W .357 mag revolver. Reliable... no jams and no shells left behind. Will stop anything comin' at ya. Also, will fire .38's for less expensive target practice. Affordable, I got mine used for $350 and it is sturdy and solid.

Arsenal SA-93 (if you can find one).

It's a Bulgarian AK variant w/ a MILLED receiver, chrome-lined barrel, & many Steyr parts inside ;)

I paid $300 new in 1994... they're about double (or triple) today, but worth it (no better AK on Earth).

 Quoting: Carbon Boy

Benelli's are pretty pricey last I checked around...get a decent pump 12ga for around $200....a Mossberg-500 is good, there are better, but price of poker goes up. I own a Moss-500 and it's gone through a gazzilion rounds and gets the job done...for home defense it's hard to beat a 12ga shotgun...devestating within 100 feet and they unload their energy real fast...with a rifle if you throw an errant shot?...you could kill someone VERY far away...that won't happen with a shotgun. Also a very versatile firearm that can put meat on the table with slug rounds...or with shot rounds...many a deer taken with a 12ga slug and in some states...that is all you are allowed to hunt deer with.

For a handgun get the most knockdown you feel you can handle....a 9mm is ok...but a .45 is better IMO...stick with the more common ammos and practice as much as you can and become efficient with your firearm of choice...you'll get 10,000 people with 10,000 different opinions and a lot are just going to be idiotic...Yeah if you don't have .454 Casul for carry...yer an idiot!...

Safety first and always...if you have kids around...then I suggest an auto for a handgun and not keeping a round chambered...same for a shotgun...so get proficient with racking the actions and getting that rnd up until it's second nature automatic.

Just like any tool there are many firearms that do better at certain tasks than others...but for all around versatility if you do not own a lot of tools than a 12ga shotgun and strong reliable pistol will probably serve you best...and become a good shooter...a disciplined shooter with .22 can be more effective than a retard with a $5,000 heavy hitting show piece....
