Tremors In Tennessee Could Mean An Active New Madrid Fault Line
January 27, 2010 03:11 PM EST

Experts say that the New Madrid fault is active which could result in an earthquake. Recent tremors in West Tennessee could mean an earthquake in the future on the New Madrid fault line. Earthquakes that occur on the New Madrid fault can affect areas such as Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. The fault has produced four of the largest North American earthquakes in history. The four earthquakes that occurred in this region happened between 1811 and 1812. The magnitude of the quakes was in excess of 8.0.

The recent tremors in the area seem to mean that this fault is active and should be watched carefully.

Update: USGS confirms second earthquake in Blount County
Becky Simmons Updated: 4/21/2010 11:19:45 PM Posted: 4/21/2010 10:23:20 PM

The USGS confirms a 2.6 magnitude earthquake hit Blount County at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night.

The USGS website marks the epicenter 3 miles southwest from Maryville, near the intersection of Morganton Road and Level Drive.

Residents in Blount County have been flooding 10 News with their accounts of the quake. A resident of the Creekside Apartments in Maryville says the quake knocked picture frames from her wall.

Viewers say the quake shook for about 3-5 seconds. Many say they heard a loud boom as the trembling started.

Blount County dispatchers say they have had no reports of damage.

Early Tuesday morning a 3.3 magnitude quake shook the county just south of Maryville in the Clover Hill area.

Earthquake Survey for the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone

Historic Earthquakes and Future Insight

A new research project at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will provide the first-ever record of seismic activity in the Tennessee Valley, providing new information not only on past quakes but insight into future activity, as well.

Led by Robert Hatcher, UT Knoxville distinguished scientist and professor of earth and planetary sciences, the research team will explore sites from just north of Knoxville, Tenn., through the Chattanooga area to just north of Rome, Ga.

The Second Most Active Area in the East

The area, known as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ), is the second most active area for earthquake activity in the eastern U.S. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is funding the study.

There are currently more than 20 applications for new nuclear plants in the Southeast, and Hatcher says the need for new information in determining their feasibility is behind the study.

"We have been working to get this study funded for more than 20 years," said Hatcher. "An understanding of seismic history in the ETSZ will let us know what is possible here, and that's vital in planning new large engineered structures."

Hmm, this is strange. According to that map, there have been several earthquakes within a couple of miles of my home within the past 6 months, the most recent one being at 3:11 a.m. this morning. We haven't felt anything or even knew these had occured. The mags ranged from 1.8 to 2.6 with depths of .1 to 2 miles. Can quakes this size and depth even be felt?

Nothing new on USGS yet since you two posted. We have a lot of construction here in Middle TN. If there ever was anything less than a 2, I wouldn't know the difference between that and blasting. Any chance it was just construction?

This recent story summarizes the 3 recent East Tennessee earthquakes that I posted about previously...

Third Earthquake Since Tuesday Hits East Tennessee
Posted: Apr 22, 2010 10:08 AM

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Residents of Blount County in East Tennessee have experienced their third earthquake in less than 48 hours.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 10:14 p.m. EDT Wednesday, measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale. Over 400 people reported feeling the quake on their website, usgs.gov.

WVLT in Knoxville reported several emails and calls from residents who described it as a "big jolt" that shook their houses.

The earthquake was centered about two miles west-southwest of Maryville with a depth of 1.1 miles.

Officials with the Blount County emergency dispatch center told WVLT the quake prompted several calls, but there were no reports of damages or injuries.

The earthquake was the third to strike the area since Tuesday morning, when a 3.3 magnitude earthquake woke some East Tennessee residents. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a small 1.6 earthquake just five minutes later.

The epicenters were all within a half mile of each other.

Kristin Parker with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency in Nashville said there were no reports of injury or damage from the larger quake, but said the agency received a lot of phone calls reporting the shake.

Some reported noises that they at first thought was thunder.

One man said he was walking the family dog when he felt the earth shake. He said his wife thought he had run into their house with his truck.(LOL)

A person in Alcoa said the house shook and the windows rattled for about five seconds.

Actually, as I mentioned earlier, this area is actually considered the ETSZ (Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone) rather than the New Madrid Fault...
Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone
The Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone is a geographic area subject to frequent small earthquakes which stretches from northeast Alabama to southwest Virginia. The Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ) is also known as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone and the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone. The area is one of the most active earthquake zones in the eastern United States.

Yes, if you are implying that there have been other previous threads regarding the TN earthquakes, then yes, you are correct. I simply wanted to start a thread that was a bit more comprehensive and a "clearinghouse" for all the information regarding the current TN earthquakes.

Now, if you mean something different, feel free to elaborate.
