What does it mean when your writing is "convoluted?"
If someone were to tell you that your writing is convoluted, what are they trying to say?

It means it's hard to understand. You have many ideas mixed in together, and it confuses the reader.

What if you purposely write in sophisticated sentence structures; that is, sophisticated enough to easily go above the comprehension level of the laymen reader. Would that be considered "convoluted?"

Re: What does it mean when your writing is "convoluted?"
People say writing is "convoluted" when you don't make your points clearly, using well-constructed sentences written with a consistent grammar style and building a coherent argument structure systematically, so that as they read, they have to keep a growing collection of points and ideas in their head and sometimes it fails to all come together because people lose track of the points you are trying to make and/or because they lose interest.

Hemingway is considered one of this country's greatest writers. He never used big words or big sentences and he painted vivid pictures.

"sophisticated" doesn't equate to good writing.

it means you need more commas and stuff cause you have way to many letters just all jammed up together and it needs to be diluted some with random punctuation marks and such.

ok?

By most normal people, it probably would be, if they knew the meaning of the word. I seem to remember that most news articles are written at something like a 10th grade level, so the average reader could understand.

Your post above is fairly sophisticated writing; sophisticated enough that I would think you would know the definition of "convoluted."

Were you asking a rhetorical question?

That is nice but it does not answer my question. Does the use of sophisticated sentence structure & grandiose verbiage constitute "convoluted" writing?

You're obviously trying too hard to be eccentric and theatrical, as a result your writing style is overwhelming the message you're trying to convey. Pull it back a notch skipper and stop trying to be so sophisticated.

No. It was not a rhetorical question. My grad professor took a cheap shot at me or, at least, I felt she did. Sometimes I think many of these professors feel threatened of being up-staged by their students.

1Ki 19:4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree, and prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, YAHUWAH, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”

Odds are, your grad professor is probably an above average reader, unless she teaches something like sociology or women's studies, in which case, you definately went over her head. Just try to be more concise with your writing, maybe use a little less fancy language, and by all means, don't think you're smarter than your professor. It WILL come through in your writing, she WILL be insulted, and you'll probably end up taking the class again.

I've taken her for a couple of grad courses and each time she robs me of an A (I got a B+ for each class). I felt raped and powerless to fight back.

Well, shit. I don't know, then. Dumb it down to around 8th grade, put in a bunch of "like"s and make sure to rip on Whitey a lot, and you should be good.

In that case, it means you could make your argument more effectively.

Part of graduate work is learning how to communicate effectively to other professionals. You can't talk like a pretentious, rambling, pontificating bore to professors. You shouldn't have to go fishing through a well of complexity to describe how cold the water is.

Most professors don't have time for that kind of 18th century affected bullshit.

Sounds like your condescending attitude is coming out as poor scholarship.

I actually confided in one of her colleagues. I told him that I just could not bring myself to dumbing down the language of my papers. I asked him to speak to her but he refused to get involved. I am at wits' end -- don't know what to do ;-( I feel nothing should quench the creativity of a writer, not even a professor.

Can I email or IM it to you? I don't want to post it here, because at times professors will do a key word net search to check if a paper is plagerized. This thread would come up if she did a search on my paper and I don't think she'd take kindly to some of the comments I made about her.
