I thought it was only male squirrels who eat offspring purely for territorial purposes, not for the meal itself.

Amazing...! I love squirrels - learned a lot about them as I grew up...sooo cute and intelligent.

I'll post this in another thread: Thread: For All The Animal Lovers Out There!

They're not intelligent. They live by instinct. If this squirrel was so intelligent, why didn't he call an amber lance?

Re: Squirrel Fights off Crows - Protects Dead Friend's Body
I once saw a red squirrel catch a juvenile rat, take it up into a tree and drop it to the concrete from about 20 ft up.

The rat squealed and writhed when it hit the concrete, and started kind of screaming. The squirrel ran down from the tree, bit the rat in the neck. Once it was dead, it carried it into the tree for lunch.

Simply amazing.

Don't underestimate the intelligence of animals. Some animals do have a greater brain capacity than humans. A proven fact.

The squirrel was just protecting dinner...

Those of you who think that they are herbivores are grossly mistaken.

The will eat anything..including electrical wire on houses. Squirrels are basically rats and will eat anything.

sidenote: I had a rat as a pet once that my snake didnt eat, and it was one of the smartest, fun pets that I have ever had.

Me too!! headbang They're very smart! Mine was so affectionate. He loved to ride aroundd on my shoulder underneath my long hair. I'd take him everywhere with me, and no one was the wiser as he'd stay hidden beneath his "curtain" of hair LOL!!! I miss that little guy:(

I rescued a 'feeder rat' from a co-worker who wanted to give it to his snake for a meal, bad decision on my part. Turned out to be a biter. Guess it's the hand raised ones that are the nice ones!

How sad, it seemed to want to wake it up with swishing his tail then he laid down beside it, I lived in country for years and never saw them eating meat or eachother. That was very sad.

SQURRELS AR CANNIBALISTIC. IT WAS SAVING THE MEAL FOR ITSELF. I HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN MANY TIMES.

I'll bet you don't have many friends.

.

Ditto! He was trying to protect him ! We need to learn from them, we think they not understand, and there you go! sad and noble. Thank you.

Sorry to interrupt your delusion but, " Squirrels' diet consists primarily of a wide variety of plant food, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi and green vegetation. However some squirrels also consume meat, especially when faced with hunger.[6] Squirrels have been known to eat insects, eggs, small birds, young snakes and smaller rodents. Indeed, some tropical species have shifted almost entirely to a diet of insects.

Predatory behavior by various species of ground squirrels, particularly the thirteen-lined ground squirrel, has been noted.[7] Bailey, for example, observed a thirteen-lined ground squirrel preying upon a young chicken.[8] Wistrand reported seeing this same species eating a freshly killed snake.[9] Whitaker examined the stomachs of 139 thirteen-lined ground squirrels, and found bird flesh in four of the specimens and the remains of a short-tailed shrew in one;[10] Bradley, examining white-tailed antelope squirrels' stomachs, found at least 10% of his 609 specimens' stomachs contained some type of vertebrate—mostly lizards and rodents." The fact that this video is pinned with that title and with a 4.5 star rating epitomizes the assbackwards way GLPers view the world. In spite of all the evidence from wikipedia and videos of squirrels eating animals, many of us prefer to live in a world of delusion instead of reality.

May we all learn to dream within reason and embrace reality.

Re: Squirrel Fights off Crows - Protects Dead Friend's Body
A Colorado squirrel would have fired several warning shots at the crows.

Taken his friend, had a nice funeral/burial for him/her in an unknown spot so the crows could never get to its body.

The Colorado squirrel would go and visit his friends grave site every year .....and put its favorite nut at the grave site.

As a Colorado woman, I would have to agree. That is the way we handle things in the West...

But... he laid down on top of it!?

Here's something no one mentioned, maybe the dead squirrel was a female in heat hence the male's behavior?
