I thought it was only male squirrels who eat offspring purely for territorial purposes, not for the meal itself.

I once saw a red squirrel catch a juvenile rat, take it up into a tree and drop it to the concrete from about 20 ft up.

The rat squealed and writhed when it hit the concrete, and started kind of screaming. The squirrel ran down from the tree, bit the rat in the neck. Once it was dead, it carried it into the tree for lunch.

Simply amazing.

Me too!! They're very smart! Mine was so affectionate. He loved to ride aroundd on my shoulder underneath my long hair. I'd take him everywhere with me, and no one was the wiser as he'd stay hidden beneath his "curtain" of hair LOL!!! I miss that little guy:(

I rescued a 'feeder rat' from a co-worker who wanted to give it to his snake for a meal, bad decision on my part. Turned out to be a biter. Guess it's the hand raised ones that are the nice ones!

How sad, it seemed to want to wake it up with swishing his tail then he laid down beside it, I lived in country for years and never saw them eating meat or eachother. That was very sad.
