Read the PLU labels. If the five digit PLU number starts with "8," the food is either genetically modified or genetically engineered. Don't buy it. Please note that all fruit has a four digit PLU code. This number tells you what kind of fruit it is. If the PLU code has five numbers, the first number represents either organic (8) or genetically modified (9).

Step 2Shop at natural food stores. Shopping at a natural or organic food store does not eliminate the possibility of purchasing genetically modified food, although it does increase the possibility of having a wider variety of non-genetically modified fruits and vegetables.

Step 3Purchase a share of a Community Support Agriculture (CSA). Basically, a CSA share is purchasing a portion of a farmer's harvest. The farmer provides you with a basket full of fruits and vegetables every week. Sometimes, CSA can also offer raw milk and fresh eggs. Some farmers, like those at Common Good Farms in Nebraska, refuse to grow genetically modified fruit and vegetables. Be sure to ask your farmer before you purchase the share!

Step 4Buy direct from the farmer. You can ask the farmer at your local farmer's market if they grow non-GMO produce. If they don't know, don't buy. Be aware that most seeds and plants out there today are genetically modified or engineered.

Step 5Grow your own produce. Look in the seed catalog or on the package for the "Non-GMO" label. If there is no label, you can assume that the seed or plant is genetically modified. Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company and Seed Savers Exchange have an excellent selection of non-GMO seeds, as well as a beautiful array of heirloom varieties.

This is some good info on recent research.

Here is a quote from above article:
"Another surprise was discovered by scientists in hamsters of the third generation. Hair grew in the mouth of the animals that took part in the experiment. It’s unclear why this happened."

If you stay away from all packaged food, unless organic, and avoid the hit list (soy, sugar that is not cane sugar, corn, potatoes, squash etc...) unless organic or from farmer's market you should be fine.

Also, check this site and add to the list if you wish to participate.

Re: What fruits and veggies are NOT GMO?
I've been to some barn style veggie shops that sell health food and other organic food. Labels said proudly 'local organic' on most of the veg...so one assumes it all is...so i asked the lady in there and she said the ones without local labels were imported produce - i asked where - she said she didn't know!

Don't get fooled by these shops that have a bale of straw outside that appear mostly organic..not saying all are like this one i went to...but to fill out their produce they bulk buy import it seems...and they don't seem to care if it's organic or not.

There's quite a few community allotment schemes going on over here...you could get yourself some home-grown veggies by just helping out at one of these groups so great for folk who have no growing knowledge of produce. Worth looking in your local area for 4 hours a week of fresh air and socialising..imo

I didn't see that until after I posted it, there's a comment on the bottom of that page that explains it better.. from what they said 4 digit is good even if it starts with an 8 or 9. 5 digit is bad, at least that's how I took it.

They really should have to label it better IMO

to be fair, i'm not totally against GMO. If successful, it could do amazing things, like grow drought tolerant crops for example. My problem is there doesn't seem to be much research going on and the fact that they would use GMO so crops can be sprayed with roundup is horrifying, to say the least!!

Research 'terminator seeds' ..they're worrying. Once they cross-pollinate with nature there is a risk of wiping it out slowly. Terminator seeds don't produce seeds, they're like one-off plants. If nature didn't reproduce then slowly bees...butterflies..birds are wiped out..along with us!

That's the message i got when i looked into it.

Yet somehow nature is more persistent, so i think it would conquer man :-)

you can call me a moran again if you want.

if you want gmo free food, go to heirloom seeds. if you don't want to or can't grow them for some reason, you can find gmo free food growers at your local farmers market or gardening club (look in your local phone book or curb). make sure they advertise where their produce comes from or you will not know for sure. well, either way, you won't know for sure unless you grow your own or really trust the grower. glp has had many threads on gmo foods. maybe a glp search rather than a google search would do better?

fyi they've doubled the amount of roundup that can be used on soybeans now. yummy, yummy, yummy.

and you can eat seeds: pumpkin, squash, sunflower, cucumber, poppy and many others so just make sure they're from non-gmo crops.

have you a gooder day.

I'm kinda against GM foods - you wanna risk potential kidney and liver damage? It's like artificial food...devoid of nutrition, wrapped in plastic, drenched in lymph node clogging chemicals that originated from a man-made bluprint.

I didn't originate from a labratory so i'm not gonna eat from one!

Just to clarify: PLU codes that start with 9 are organic, ones that start with 8 are GMO.

[link to www.plucodes.com]

Q How is organically grown produce coded on a PLU label?
A The number 9 is added to the front of the regular four digit PLU code. (e.g. an organically grown
banana would be 94011.)

Q How is genetically engineered produce coded on a PLU label?
A The number 8 is added in front of the regular four digit PLU code. (e.g. a genetically engineered
vine ripe tomato would be 84805.)

I have to agree with what another poster said about farmers markets. There's vegetable and fruit stands that are good and some that are bad.

To anyone that has ever grown there own tomatoes fruits/vegetables, then you can taste the difference between small fruit/vegetable farmers who use pesticides and modifiers verses the ones who just use cow shit, water, dirt, and a little friendly help from the Sun. Another idea is you can start your own garden. I would hit the fresh fruit/vegetable stands first along with buying seeds to grow your own stuff. And after just tasting the produce you can tell whats modified or not. I know I can.
But after a year of your own growing you can then finally rest assure your produce is clean.

Question authority every time. Ask them how that makes them feel. Ask them why? Ask them when you have an opinion with your opinion and question them with that! There is no being with ALL THE answers accept for God. Even still question. But trust if it's all good and loving then follow with your full heart believing. For the light will always be the light. I have two bags of Certified Organically grown seeds purchased from Swanson Health Products. Both PUC codes begin with an 8:

The sunflower seeds: 87614, and the Trail Mix: 87614.

So, I'd say the gmo PCU codes begin with 9.

For conventionally grown fruit, the PLU code on the sticker consists of four numbers. Organically grown fruit have a five-numeral PLU beginning with the number 9. Genetically engineered fruit has a five-numeral PLU beginning with the number 8.

Most CA strawberries are GMO these days. I don't think most other fruits are. I believe most green veggies are safe also. Alfalfa, soy, wheat, corn -- the widely used grain type things -- are mostly what are GMO.
