5.0 is not a tiny earthquake. It can actually do some damage - crack foundations, etc.

It's also just the right size for a precursor quake, just like EAT said.

San Francisco was built upon a land fill (well a large part of it). The soil is prone to liquefaction, greatly exaggerating the effects of an earthquake.
