Desktop, or Laptop ? And Why
I need a new computer, but cannot decide which to get.
I have the rest of the desktop set up, just need a new tower.

Desktops are cheaper, seem to hold more, but you have to pay for internet.

With laptops, internet is free whereever you go, including in the home right ? And I can take it with me whereever I go.

So, I ask, which do you prefer, and why ?

Re: Desktop, or Laptop ? And Why
internet isnt just givin to you with a laptop. but with the laptop you can use your neightbors connection if they have wifi. laptop connect cards still have some service charge. but you could just get a wireless adapter for a desktop.

desktops are generally better for games and heavy processing needs and imo just better all around. ive had a few laptops but they always broke or some shit so i render them more a pain in the ass.

but if you got places to be get a laptop.

That's what they told me at the computer store. They said as long as you have a router, you dont need to purchase internet providers. They said just think about everyone who hangs out at coffee houses and such. They all use free wi-fi.

That is true, but you don't want to look like a bum and go to starbucks just for their wifi.

In that case, just go to the library.

Basically, if you're on the go alot and need web access, get a laptop.

With a desktop, it is cheaper, more powerful for the same prices. If you're a hermit like me there's not much point to a laptop.

Okay. I dont travel. I use the computer at home, only.
I'm using my roommates laptop since my desktop fried last week. My desktop was hooked up to the internet. My roommate purchased a router for his laptop. I'm on the laptop without a desktop tower being connected to the internet in my home. Does this mean then that I am getting the internet off someone elses wave through the router ?

A router is just a means to allow several computers to share the same internet connection. You still need to pay for internet. If you aren't paying, you're leeching, and if you were my neighbor and I caught you leeching, there would be consequences.

But, you wouldn't get past my security anyway.

It means you are connected to the internet via the WiFi connection from the router, unless you plugged in your old network cable.
Just judging by your post, and answers I would recommend a laptop. Desktops are better suited now-a-days for people who game and edit video/pictures; the latter being better suited by a Mac.

In the u.s most wifi is free.
You can go to cafes, restaurants, library, etc to get a signal.
Most on my block have wifi and I can always find a "free" signal when I want.
The best thing about a laptop is you can move it anywhere in the house you want.
If you load up a movie and want to watch it in bed you can, with a desktop you cannot.

Okay. So chances are then I could get a free signal from anywhere since free wi-fi is almost everywhere. The computer store person said the same thing. I could get the signal off a starbucks 10 miles away, from home. All I would need is a router. BUT, does free wi-fi have more problems then internet connections.

I don't use a router, I use a built in wifi card on laptop and a wifi usb adapter on the desktop.
So the connection isn't always as stable as you'd like it but usually it is fine.
Then again an internet connection thorugh a company isn't always that reliable either.
10 miles away-no not with only a wifi adapter as your adapter needs to be somewhat within I think like 500 feet of a router with wifi service.
So it would need to be a house in close proximity of yours to pick up their wifi signal if using at home without your own router.
If you have your own router and service it doesn't matter you will automaticaly have a signal when ever you want it.
I don't know anything at all about using a adapter and router together to get a signal without having your own service.
If you can get up to 10 miles without having to subscribe to a service I'll go buy a router right now lol.

"Free wifi" might be possible if you live in a dense area, full of dense people.

You won't get a signal 10 miles away with a router. You misunderstood what he was saying, or he was not very knowledgeable. To get a signal from that distance, you would need a signal booster.

"Free wifi" means you are at the mercy of whoever is providing it "free" (they could switch it off at any time) and the speed depends upon how many other leeches are streaming porn at the same time.

If you can't afford to pay for an internet connection, WTF are you buying a new computer?
