Whirlpool firing 1100 Union workers in Indiana, moving plant to Mexico!
Whirlpool Will Close US Plant in June; Send Jobs to Mexico

Whirlpool Corporation is shutting down a refrigerator plant in Evansville, Indiana that will put 1100 people out of work. Are they having trouble selling refrigerators in these bad economic times? No. Whirlpool is profitable and still selling plenty of refrigerators here. But they want to ship these jobs to Mexico where they can produce them cheaper and without having to respect U.S. labor and environmental regulations.

Whirlpool took $19 million in economic recovery money and now instead of helping our economy recover, it’s destroying 1100 good American jobs.

The AFL-CIO has started an online petition drive telling Whirlpool to “Keep It Made In America” to save our jobs. You can find it at unionvoice.org/campaign/Evansville The AFL-CIO says Whirlpool should reverse its decision to keep these 1100 jobs in the U.S. and help our economic recovery. The labor federation says taxpayer economic recovery money should be used to create jobs in America, not ship them to cheap labor markets in other countries.

Well the Union supported NAFTA and GATT so whats their problem? They wanted open borders and they got it. Not sure why stupid Union people allowed their corrupt leaders to do that but they did. So its hard to have pity for them now. They cut their own throats and now want to cry about it.

Don't laugh, but that's probably what's going to happen. Will Mexico institute an illegal alien law? This is a three-ring circus, don't you think?

As I see it, the real problem is not the illegals, but the fat-cat, psychopathic corporations that are shipping all the jobs to other countries where people will work for crumbs.

The jobs have been shipped, that happened as soon as NAFTA was adopted. What's happening now is that people are competing for the shit jobs that nobody wanted to do before.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 943277

Thats true. all the gains made by unions were over 50 years ago. Since then the Unions have sold out to the corporations and the Democrats. Every contract starting 50 years ago have been slowly giving back what was gained. In the last 20 years they have played a smoke and mirror game. They get a raise in one hand and give back medical benifits in the other hand. In the end the raise does not come close to equaling the medical costs they gave back. and the medical give backs start right then but the raise is always over the life time of the contract. so you don't get the raises right away. You get a little one year, then a little more the next, then a little more the next, and then the biggest part in the last year of the contract. By then inflation has ate up any potential gains you might have.

They already have one, and it is pretty tough. They do enforce it and don't care about political correctness. They will ask you for your immigration documents and not worry about it. However a few bucks here and there can take the heat off.

when it comes to Whirlpool...I have a dishwasher that's almost 30 years old...a Whirlpool...and it's a great dishwasher...on the other hand, I have a Whirlpool Washer and Dryer just a couple years old....and imo..I could take them both and throw them off the end of the dock...they are a pita...cheap and I won't buy anything Whirlpool again because of them...but still sorry to see the 1100 lose their jobs...

In the last several weekend Evansville (Indiana) "Sunday Courier and Press" front page articles, the emphasis has been put on retraining the dismissed employees for "new, high-tech positions" in the area.
Really? Where are all these "high-tech positions" in the Evansville area????
I think the Maytag brand also was sold to China investors. I won't consider Maytag or Whirlpool as they both have abandoned America.

Worker still gets screwed either way. Only now it's management *and* union leadership pocketing coin on labor's misery.

Nice try. That's not true. These corporations will leave America until Americans will work like Indians, Chinese, and Mexican slaves. The corporations and WTO thank you for your buying the talking points, however.

Cost of living has gone up in the USA. People deserve living wages and benefits. Screw all these corporations who think that they can screw Americans and turn around and send their tinker toy products.

unions grow - middle class america grows to proportions unparalleled in history. wealthiest, largest, most powerful middle class ever.

unions decline - middle class shrinks, wages stagnate, businesses under-cut U.S. workers via off-shoring, out-sourcing, and hiring migrant workers.
