The object I am seeing doesn't even come close to following the Sun over the horizon not by a long shot. I have never seen Venus in the position that this obejct is, not even close. Not even half that high ever. |

I awoke to more snow this morning! So far, Spring has sprung a leak and I'm sick of it. So sorry, but whatever you can see in sky is lost behind a cloudbank from where I'm standing, dripping wet. 'When Plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men, they create for themselves, in the course of time, a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.' Frederic Bastiat, 'The Law' 1850 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes." JohnSwinton, 1830-1901, Former chief-of-staff New York Times ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "The bold effort the present bank has made to control the Government, the distress it has wantonly produced ... are but premonitions of the fate that awaits the American People should they be deluded into a perpetuation of this institution (The Bank of the United States), or the establishment of another like it." Astronut Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 634208 United States 05/04/2010 04:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Venus has a tight little orbit around the Sun, that is why it cannot possibly stray more than 10-20 degrees from the horizon after sunset. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 488240You're thinking of Mercury. Venus' orbit is not nearly as tight and can stray much higher, roughly 48 degrees high. That said I was just looking at it last night and I measured Venus to be no higher than about 30 degrees at sunset, nowhere near 45. How are you measuring the altitude? |

I've never seen Venus flash colors, but I've seen pleanty of color from some of the bigger stars when they are near the horizon. Sirius is to the left of Venus in the south-western sky in the evening. It will twinkle colors like mad when it is setting or rising. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 896179 United Kingdom 05/04/2010 07:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I keep seeing this object after sunset in the western sky. Very high up like 45 degrees, far too high to be Venus. Quoting: I saw it too 488240Saw it again last night. Careful with that. It's harder than you think to gauge the angle. Are you using a sextant or something? I always find myself way off by eye, compared to when I set coordinates using my telescope; I always think I'm looking higher than I am. Anyway, from where I'm sitting Venus is about 22 degrees altitude at sunset, at -3.83 magnitude: if what you're seeing is extremely bright it's probably Venus. The bright star Capella, 0.05 magnitude, is also in the western sky at 43 degrees, so that might be your object. If what you're seeing isn't Venus, then it should be very obvious that it isn't Venus, because Venus will be there in the sky as well, lower down in the sunset. If you're looking at Capella, it will be about as far above Venus as Venus is above the horizon. So find Venus, and tell us where your object is relative to that. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 916338 United States 05/04/2010 07:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I saw a very bright object that seemed to blink, not the twinkle that you associate with the stars that was in the Western sky. Venus had already disappeared behind the mountain across from my house so I was pretty sure I wasn't confusing this object with Venus. It seemed to move quite quickly in the night sky but I'm not really saying that I think it was moving. The time was about 10:45 p.m. so I decided to take a look the next night. I watch Venus disappear and was out of sight by 10:00 from the area I can view. That night was as clear as a bell but I did not see the bright object again. It was not in the sky and I stayed up until 11:15. This object was very very bright and I will repeat, it blinked. I don't know if it's the same object you are seeing but it was in my Western sky. |

It used to be more in the southern sky, but as the seasons roll on it is now more in the southwest. Or are you speaking even more "west"? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 949573cant mistake the ISS coz its hauling ass and is only visible for a few minutes at best. right? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 916338Well, if it was visibly moving relative to the stars, then it certainly wasn't a star or a planet. Some satellites blink, but fewer nowadays than used to; it happens if they're spinning, as sunlight glints off different parts of the structure. If not, then it was probably an aircraft of some kind. You can get forecasts for overflights of various spacecraft for any location in the world here: [link to www.heavens-above.com] Pull off a schedule for your site, and then go out and spot yourself a few satellites so you'll know what they look like in future. |

So sorry, but whatever you can see in sky is lost behind a cloudbank from where I'm standing, dripping wet. We had 107* in South Texas yesterday. Want some of ours? 88* is the normal high this time of year. A more reasonable 91* today. Cloudless, bright blue skies...beautiful, but HOT. And no breeze...which is NOT normal at all. Supposed to be in the mid-90's the rest of the week. Mosquitoes are bad from a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks. |
