Flooded Nashville Is Losing "Untold Millions" Each Day, And Nobody Is Paying Attention

The crisis in Nashville everyone continues to ignore is costing "untold millions" each day, according to Tennessean.

For now the crisis in the city is being pushed aside by Greece, the Times Square bomber, and the oil slick.

Downtown businesses will remain closed all week with water damage and power outage. Sadly, most insurance plans won't cover flood damage:

Tennessean:

Like many Nashville residents, the downtown Hilton did not have flood insurance coverage, Waters said.
The same was true for Mac McDonald, one of the owners of the Pilcher Building, which houses law offices. McDonald was scrambling to call his insurance provider Tuesday to find out if their policy would cover the damage.
"Right now, we don't know how much damage we have," McDonald said.

The area is approved for federal disaster relief funds (so your tax dollar will help pay).

And yet they have plenty of airtime to cover the amature terrorist bombing that didn't hurt anyone or cause any major damage? If there is so much doom already why are the media and Obama spending so much time hyping a non event at the expense of a very real tragedy, this flood has KILLED 30 people already while the oilslick is a thing in progress it hasn't killed anybody yet and while bussinesses will be affected they haven't gone under yet. Plenty of time to mourn the losses when they actually occur don't you think.

In the USA it would appear some states are more equal than others in the eyes of both the media and the government and this is purely an outsiders view of the coverage and sympathy these situations have garnered. Maybe Nashville doesn't have enough blacks to make it newsworthy.

You have noticed to then. But don't worry.
3 weeks after Katrina - people were dieing in the dome.
3 weeks after New Horizons - Florida coast is about to go down.
3 weeks after Nashville floods - life will have pretty much returned to normal. Construction projects will be underway.
Banks will make small loans, churches will make donations, communities will work together and fix their shit.

Who wants to see success like that in the news?

We Are Nashville
By Patten FuquaPublished: May 4, 2010

Allow me a moment to step away from the usual voice of this website.

What I am about to write has absolutely nothing to do with hockey.

If you live outside of Nashville, you may not be aware, but our city was hit by a 500-year flood over the last few days. The national news coverage gave us 15 minutes, but went back to focusing on a failed car bomb and an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While both are clearly important stories, was that any reason to ignore our story? It may not be as terror-sexy as a failed car bomb or as eco-sexy as an oil spill, but that’s no reason to be ignored.

The Cumberland River crested at its highest level in over 80 years. Nashville had its highest rainfall totals since records began. People drowned. Billions of dollars in damage occurred. It is the single largest disaster to hit Middle Tennessee since the Civil War. And yet…no one knows about it.

Does it really matter? Eventually, it will…as I mentioned, there are billions of dollars in damage. It seems bizarre that no one seems to be aware that we just experienced what is quite possibly the costliest non-hurricane disaster in American history. The funds to rebuild will have to come from somewhere, which is why people need to know. It’s hard to believe that we will receive much relief if there isn’t a perception that we need it.

But let’s look at the other side of the coin for a moment. A large part of the reason that we are being ignored is because of who we are. Think about that for just a second. Did you hear about looting? Did you hear about crime sprees? No…you didn’t. You heard about people pulling their neighbors off of rooftops. You saw a group of people trying to move two horses to higher ground. No…we didn’t loot. Our biggest warning was, “Don’t play in the floodwater.” When you think about it…that speaks a lot for our city. A large portion of why we were being ignored was that we weren’t doing anything to draw attention to ourselves. We were handling it on our own.

Some will be quick to find fault in the way rescue operations were handled, but the fact of the matter is that the catastrophe could not have been prevented and it is simply ignorant beyond all reason to suggest otherwise. It is a flood. It was caused by rain. You can try to find a face to stick this tragedy to, but you’ll be wrong.

Parts of Nashville that could never even conceivably be underwater were underwater. Some of them still are. Opry Mills and the Opryland Hotel are, for all intents and purposes, destroyed. People died sitting in standstill traffic on the Interstate. We saw boats going down West End. And, of course, we all saw the surreal image of the portable building from Lighthouse Christian floating into traffic and being destroyed when cars were knocked into it. I’m still having trouble comprehending all of it.

And yet…life will go on. We’ll go back to work, to school, to our lives…and we’ll carry on. In a little over a month, I’ll be on this website talking about the draft. In October, we’ll be discussing the new Predators’ season with nary a thought of these past few days. But in a way, they changed everyone in this town. We now know that that it can happen to us…but also know that we can handle it.

Because we are Nashville.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Many did not have flood insurance. Will they get fed money for relief?

If not, there will be many empty neighborhoods and businesses.

The race angle is sadly true.

No riots, no looting, no bunches of people sitting around waiting to be rescued -- no CNN 24 hour coverage, no screaming rants of WHY WHY WHY by anyone.

If you're white and in trouble, it's just assumed you can take care of yourself.

Re: Flooded Nashville Is Losing "Untold Millions" Each Day, And Nobody Is Paying Attention
just reminder..the reason many with no insurance was a business decision to save $ because it would seem that was a no flood zone. (i.e. 500 yr plain)

so...for the big guys..like Hilton and so forth...they can recoup and rebuild no problem from their own funds..

however the litte guys is who don't have the funds to do so..

and if taxes are slated for rebuild effort...i guarantee that it will be screwed up between the majority of those entrusted to distribute accordingly, the middle men, etc for scheming how to use funds for other purposes.

it even happens on the Red Cross level... and ESPECIALLY at local level where they let locals help with disaster of large magnitude

this is per first hand observations,on the scene, from previous efforts where i've helped with disaster recovery.(i.e. is a disaster team associated with a church, and is nationwide..certified training, etc.)

just wanted to clarify, that no matter what your religious belief system is..this church is the one that comes in before Red Cross, before FEMA, before ANYONE to evaluate the disaster area and working on priorities such as fixing water supplies...for example, in a hurricane..they are on the scene as the tailwinds are leaving...

a disaster brings out the best AND the worst in people..when i first started i was stunned on the latter.

you also learn real quick who is legit in need of help and who is scamming....per the eyes.

it's probably because of the oil spill.

I only get World news is English over here on CNN and the BBC. They do mention the floods in Tennessee, but if you look at it on a worldwide level those types of floods occur almost every month somewhere.

The oil spill however is not something that doesn't happen very often. In fact the only thing they can compare it to is the Exxon Valdez. Just like the volcano in Iceland also received a lot of coverage because it was a rare occurance.

Hope things get better the folks in the southern US.

Well I can tell you that I live on big, high hill. Then my yard is walled (5'), then my house is raised another 6' off that. Train station used to be next to me, thus I live on DEPOT Hill. If I EVER where to get flooded it would take more than a biblical flood.
