Valium, aspirin, benedryl, valerian root---safe for dogs BUT CHECK DOSAGE FOR YOUR DOG! Never give a dog alcohol.
(FYI aspirin is really bad for cats--they can't take all the same meds as dogs)

Do not give your dog anything without first seeing a vet (dog doctor).

Your best bet most likely would be a prescription strength tranquilizer/sedative that the vet can dispense in a one pill does the trick form instead of you attempting to cut a benadril down to the correct dosage.

The problem with dosing with human sized pills with small dogs is that you can OD the dog.

Yes Benadril can make a serious problem, hallucinations is one, liver issues is another.

A light tap with a ball peen hammer works every time, although they may have a bit of a personality change afterwards.

I'm just kidding! Honestly, just mix a little bleach and ammonia...

A .22LR fired right between the eyes should stun him and do the trimming job nicely at the same time!

Many animal procedures are done at home which may be on a farm with knowledgeable people dealing with many animals much longer that a "professional veterinarian" who will suck your wallet dry. The vets are good and have advanced equipment but there many ways of saving money for the important things like surgeries if ever necessary. Full anesthetic is not always necessary. For example trimming nails. If you trim too short the animal will feel a little pain as we do but we learn and get better at it. Every day it is common practice to brand cattle and horses with a red hot emblem or for a person to get a tattoo with out anesthetic but if you want your dogs name in it's ear to prove ownership instantly, the veterinarians insist on anesthesia. This is expensive and not health for the dog. It is regular and accepted procedure all over the world for puppies to have their tail cut off with out being put to sleep. |An hour later they run around like nothing happened. Most dogs can become very very relaxed when laying down and being softly touched and rubbed be 1,2 or more people. Although I don't recommend drugs or alcohol but some people have had good results and also a few bites of a "Cheech and Chong specially prepared" brownie. JUST KNOW THE RIGHT AMOUNTS AND NEVER NEVER GIVE A DOG ASPIRIN. For help with controlling and relaxing your dog I would highly recommend watching episodes of Caesar Malon, The Dog Wisperer. Hope this has been of help.
