No, not usually. Power can take a few minutes to turn back on, but usually it is instant.

This happened twice to me last year. Quite scary when you're not expecting it, eh!

Re: loud boom
the smart grid is able to manipulate power in every aspect of itself now adays. You heard a tansformer blow, OR a close strike either way what happened is there was something that caused the power to go down and the Grid simply re-routed power bringing you back online around the problem. Some tech somewhere got an email, and theres a trouble ticket, and the parts needed are being loaded on a truck...

If it blew out at night, the people affected by it probably wouldn't notice beyond the noise, if they were light sleepers

Doesn't necessarily need to be caused by a car accident, although probable

not everything can be re-routed.. ALSO the grid cares more about hospitols schools malls etc than residences. SO, if it has to rob from peter to pay paul and keep the lights on in the Emergency room, it will.

Too much focus on the "smart" part that this grid isn't

You're right about it being able to re-route or not

If a transformer blows near your home, chances are you're going to be with no power until it's replaced... Further away there is hope for re-routing

It's nice that people are trying not to scare you. It is best, since you are nervous and home alone, that you think it is a transformer.....

Yes... sure.... you betcha.... don't worry.... at all.... let it go....
'When Plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men,
they create for themselves, in the course of time,
a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.'
Frederic Bastiat, 'The Law'

"The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."
JohnSwinton, 1830-1901, Former chief-of-staff New York Times

what happens when they ALL blow ? I agree its not as "smart" as it needs to be... Solar Maximum is comming... Brace yourselves people. ITs time to consider alternative energy. Even if the Gov is smart enough to shut it down, we are still basically screwed if/when it happens. The wires all over hell (Tesla rolls in his grave as I type) act as GIANT antennas for EMF. the wires lead directly to the transformers which CANNOT handle the stress they will pop like fire crackers.

NYC, Chicago, LA you might be without for a month or two... BFE Iowa, have a fun good cpl years with no electricity..

I've seen some documentaries about that in the past... basically if something occurs and destroys the power grid, we're almost certainly going back to the dark ages for months and probably years for a lot of regions

The only way we'd survive is through the organization provided by the military... no military... no order = complete doom

Although the solar maximum is a wait and see game for me right now, at least with 2012... sun is quiet
