At my age I've had enough of "friends" that require you to not make them think and just stroke their ego. About 5 years ago I told them what was coming and they laughed a good minute at me. I decided to withdraw from them as light and fluffy ain't my style. Saw one of them the other day and they're now hurting, "you laughing now?" I asked......not a peep out of them.

I think we get resented because the information we impart takes peoples feel good away and because of that we become anathema to them. Also, peoples pride will not acknowledge someone who knows more than themselves. As grandma would say, "nobody likes smart people", and she was right.
