By the way, Immortal Technique is fucking amazing.

I have the cover art of "Revolutionary" (I forget which volume, 1 or 2) on the wall in my apartment.

Nothing like a shot-up oval office to decorate your bachelor pad. Love it. I hate this country- but the fact that a cd with cover art like that is being sold in places like Best Buy is part of the undeniable truth to me that the ONE THING our consitution got COMPLETELY correct is Freedom of Speech.

I hate this country, but I can what I want in it. That matters.

There is some truth to the OP's statement. I am struck by the lack of "Knowledge based" , "Political" and/or "Uplifting" messages that are excluded from today's Rap/hip hop music.

It's an embarrassment that someone like Jay-Z can be upheld as a hero/icon when he sold death to the people in his community. While he no longer subscribes to the drug dealing-for-survival mentatility he has led rap music into it's most bragadocious and idoit state in exchange for 100's of millions of dollars.

If the kids didn't want that music then they wouldn't buy it right? Who tells kids what they want? TV and Radio. Coroporate marketing has gotten too good and a majority of today's youth are already lost and come in only two types (both extremes)...either extremely bright or just plum dumb.

It's kind of sad (not to mention perplexing) that you'd allow yourself to believe that. In my city alone there is a flourishing rap scene. Clubs everywhere. Shows everywhere. Artists selling cds out of the trunks of their cars and on the street.

There's always kids at Broad Street and Chestnut, across from City Hall, hawking their mixtapes.

These are the young artists building their careers in underground clubs, making mixtapes, putting their performances/songs on the internet.

All "mainstream" hip-hop artists who are considered "stars" started out small-time somewhere. You can trace their careers back to the clubs and to the streets (I can't imagine you've studied the careers of too many hip-hop artists while forming your theory about them being "actors").

Anyway, why should you take my word for it? Feel free to come to Philadelphia any time you want. I'll send you an email listing half-a-dozen of the best places to see underground, grassroots hip-hop shows and you can test your theory in person.

My concern is that what may have been lies for some of the older mainstream artists is in fact now reality for the current generation. I don't believe that Lil'Wayne is lying when he raps about selling drugs. There is a definite push (political, corporate or just plain evil) to make drug use acceptable.

Even if private drug use (including marajuana) does not result in you harming your neighbor in most cases it does NOT enhance your body, health or mind. Too much of any drug (including Asprin, etc...) is bad for you so don't get caught up in the "LEGAL" or "ILLEGAL" battle. This is about consumption and activities that promote the death sentencing lifestyle (Drug dealing and Usage).

I actually agree with much of what you've written here, which, in my opinion, doesn't have much in common with what OP wrote.

OP wrote that the phenom of hip-hop is thanks to the intervention of the CIA. He's stating, literally, that our government has engineered the ascent of hip-hop.

That is PROFOUNDLY insulting to the integrity and relevance of hip-hop as an artform, and the gifted (some more than others) artists who's work MADE it popular.

To suggest it's all just a CIA smokescreen is...insulting. And ignorant.

HOWEVER, that said, yeah, artist are NOT angels, PARTICULARLY in the hip-hop community and it's VERY ironic that someone like Jay-Z, who DID sell DEATH to his people, is looked up-to today as a "role model".

It's...interesting. And brings up the whole relevance of the concept of "role models". Who/what is a role model? Are people obligated to be role models just because their successful/famous? Who SHOULD be a role model? Ect ect ect....

Personally I think parents, teachers, friends should be role models. Ideally. But, unfortunately, in this Wicked World we have people like Jay-Z who complicate things.

And it gets tricky because Jay-Z, in a many ways, is an admirable individual. He's obviously very successful. He's obviously very talented. He posesses a certain amount of business savvy. These are all things which our culture today values and looks up to. For better or worse.

BUT THE FACT REMAINS. This guy, at one time of his life, WAS a scumbag. It's very fair to say that lives were more than likely RUINED as a direct result of his criminal activities.

Soooo...then what? Do we judge/admire him for the creative, succesful artist he is now- or the life-destroying scumbag he was then...?

It's complicated. But in MY opinion, it's the responsiblity of the individual. If you want to look up to/emulate Jay-Z, then fine. But if you choose to emulate even the DARKEST of his attributes, you have to understand you may not come out as "lucky" as he did in the end.

And btw, personally, if some "wayward fate" should befall the "wayward individual" who decides to emulate Jay-Z's early criminal-inclinations, I don't think it's Jay-Z's fault at all. You choose your role models just like you choose your used cars. And I guess in both cases it's "buyer beware".

I'm talking about the 'mainstream' as they are the ones with the most influence. My second year special subject was a module entitled 'The sound of history' where we studied the history of black America through music and speeches. Rap and Hip-hop was born and died very quickly thanks to the likes of Jerry Heller and Dr. Dre who saw the potential of the medium to be mass marketed.

I see what you're saying. And I should add that I'm not at all a fan of any drugs. I personally can't stand pot. And I drink only occasionally.

I mean, YES, there's A LOT wrong with hip-hop. I HATE the videos with the hoes, and the handfuls of cash and the rims on the humvees, and the pot smoke. THAT is death. And in a lot of ways it IS corporate. It's the big evil music corporation saying, "This is what sold last month, so this is what we want you to do THIS MONTH."

And then the suit drops a pile of cash on the table and the sell-out rapper nods his head and goes out and makes some piece-of-shit exploitive video- and sometimes they all get rich (but usually they don't- the music business is particularly vicious and littered with the bodies of failed careers).

This happens in every genre in every artistic medium on the planet and it's been happening and will happen forever.

In a very real way art is a war with commerce- but at the same time they need each other. It's complicated. Sometimes it works (Radiohead made amazing music on a corporate label) and sometimes it doesn't (Nickelback).

So, IN MY OPINION, within the context of this discussion, we need to make a distinction. There are fucked up, uncreative, SELL-OUT hip-hop artist and there are relevant hip-hop artist. And I'm sure there's even a murky grey area in-between.

If you're worried about the older "mainstream" artists preaching lies and then having that filter down to the younger artists and become "truth"....well, I think the BAD HABITS certain hip-hop artists are passing down are the obsessions with drugs cars and money and the objectification of women. And yeah, there are lots of posers out there exploiting these cliches as a means to get rich/famous.

BUT, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER ARTISTIC MEDIUM ON THE PLANET, the talented, relevant, amazing artists (Immortal Technique is the first who comes to mind) are doing their own thing, and DON'T GIVE A FUCK what the sell-out "artists" do or say about anything.

The real hip-hop artist aren't buying it. They're immune. The proof is in their lyrics.

Granted, many amazing, independent or otherwise-relevant hip-hop artist do rap about weed and their love for it and that's....their thing. That's another grey area.

Personally, again, I can't stand pot.

But some people love it. And they rap about it. And they can do that if they want to.

And then at the same time certain bullshit posers will promote themselves as potheads because they think it'll help them score with a certain demographic and sell records- even though the artist maybe hasn't smoked a joint in his/her life.

Such is the world of art. Who means it and who's faking it? It's as fascinating as the art itself, I think.

todays society though- if your not listening to some type of mainstream music- or watching mainstream movies- or mainstream news or mainstream SOMETHING- then your officially NOT brainwashed- thus leaving you outside the box staring IN at the herd.... To YOU - your above them on intelligence levels- nothing egotistical about it- and TO THEM- your Below them because you dont participate in "main stream society" thus creating the tension between the two groups- instead of learning from eachother and Progressing...

People that are stuck behind with the herd- even after shown Intelligent Findings- will most likely always be stuck.. because the next-step comes around 2012 and if your not on the higher-vibrating-consciousness you WILL be left behind.... PERIOD. So they try to keep AS MANY behind as POSSIBLE with the manipulation techniques used since ancient times..... Break the code- you break free.... it is tough though.

You're free to think/feel that way if that's what your "data" tells you.

And I'll maintain I'm living in a city nearly overflowing with young, innovative hip-hop artists who would disagree with you.

I'm not saying Dr. Dre elevated the artform to unprecedented aesthetic heights. But for instance he did "discover" Eminem. And I've read many reviews/articles in various newspapers/hip-hop magazines where Eminem's recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. That's not my definition of killing an artform.

And also artists like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys and even abominable acts like The Fat Boys were popular in the mainstream long before the summer "The Chronic" came out...

Still though, the invitation still stands if you want to witness a rather thriving artform. And this is just ONE city...

i just wanted to add...

most of us know if you compare our own generation to previous, OR to current (i.e. if you are old enough) that alot of stuff has gone down hill

why is that?

think about it

what kind of people push out role models that are criminals, hard drugs, sex all over and with whomever and with whatever..

and what kind of people accept it?

"they" simply took that phase of natural human development, where you take the steps to become independent..and they labeled it "rebellion"

THEN they expanded on that sensistive stage..in the WRONG direction..EVEN nuturing in the RIGHT direction was promoted as "defy authority" (parents where shoved in that category, too,...even "normal"..loving parents)

ALSO, discipline removed in upbringing

the downfall we are witnessing was genious for engineering success

very, very, very few have SEEN what is unfolding for what it is, and refused the "programming"

Anyways, now THAT generation coming out the other side of that programming is becoming of age to lead HUMANITY!!!

WAKE UP !!!

To add to my original post, I am not saying that the rap stars are knowingly in on it with the government, I think that they are unknowingly being used as part of a big mind control thing. MAYBE a couple know about it. It's not complicated -- people watch the music videos on MTV, and they copy it. If all the rappers on MTV wore purple pants then everyone in the ghetto would wear purple pants.

Its not fair to say its only Central behind this. The human mind is very susceptible to programming at these speeds and idIot controllers seem to be able to stammer through rapping over the original tracks. Some of the stuff that you can retrieve in your brain is comical. To be honest if your not rapping out material or making the effort it is getting stuck in your brain matrix somewhere. It is possible to add to songs later and layer over them. Once you escape yourself from the misunderstood linearality of the tape machine the song storage mechanism starts to take on the form of a database. For the record. I can bitchomp tapes. Meaning I track and all that comes out is bits ground out on time. Just so you dont get any dumb ideas of wasting my time. I can kill trance easily. Also Masonically this form of mind control as are most of the are illegal. I can deal with it but your average psyker doesnt have the horsepower. I do have the solar.

Back to hip hop. My sister Kali, from the Kookie Kali Terror Syndicate has been making most of the rap since the 80's. The mind controlers seem to be unaware that there was superior programming put down on it to make removal by the good guys easier and jamming of the responsible through the use of replicators. Kali is the one responsible for most of the its hood language. She also likes to drive people off the road and shoot you if you dont do what she wants. She is a brat. Jason the Mason says hi.

And Seann wants his money. You all are going to make me start recording. First up it watch the Beatles start playing from the Qu'ran. Thats where those songs are. It would scare the life out of you if you knew what was in that book. Its really meant for world domination. on a Galax Scale. Later

I do not believe they invented the music. Hip Hop/Rap is the result of a oppressed people not having any creative outlets.
What they could get there hands on old records and a microphone. No one could have imagined it would have the influence it does today. "They" have definitely infiltrated the music. And are using it for wrong doing. Real RAP/HIP-HOP IS MORE THEN MUSIC. ITS ART. POINT BLANK PERIOD CASE CLOSED. Lets look at history and people who told the truth.
1. John F. Kennedy
2. Martin L. King
3. Tupac
4. Malcolm X
5. Abraham Lincoln
6. Nas is alive has seemed to stray away for obvious reasons

What do all of these men have in common? You can add to the list if you like...
FACT: Too much knowledge Truth is fine. But the minute you have a voice and you pick up a microphone to tell it. You will be killed. Does everyone agree with that? (oh and yes I put rappers on that list of prestigious men) Rappers have more control then parents teachers pastors. Do the math people its not a fantasy. Its right in front of your eyes.
The truth is good music may exist. But the public is not interested in looking for it. They just take their spoon fed propaganda bullshit in heaps. Homosexuality is the current agenda. I imagine a room of powerful white men sitting around a table and this is what I here "We're gonna make them take their big black dicks and stick them in each others assholes." Laughing. So as we see more black men emasculated in dresses on the big screen. Rappers are cross dressing. And listen whether you believe it or not is your dimwit problem.
