Shit! I'd hate to see what it would look like on Oct. 3rd.

Id hate to see what they are hiding from us by applying dispersant at the leak 5000ft below...

Can you imagine how much we arent even seeing?

Im sorry but a 100 ton bottlecap just isnt the answer here.

The damn thing would corrode to pieces in no time at all anyway.

Dont get me wrong, I agree...

I just think nuke is 100% out of question here...

I truly am getting a little worried the more rational thinking I am doing...

The fact they have no other options other than "shooting garbage" into the pipe??

WTF, who the hell is running this show...Glad they thought of these things well before they fucked up...

The absolute real possibilities of this are truly catastrophic, epic, worldwide doom...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 942322

I appreciate your input believe me...I just see no other answer and am looking for input and hoping someone who has some power sees this.

It wont take a big nuke...just a small one. But it has to be thermo or it wont get hot enough, long enough to create a plug.
They have detonated ...umm hundreds out in Nevada at much shallower depths that released no radiation...however, many did.
The risk is enormous....but I think they have the room in sheer rock depth to pull it off.
The alternatives are futile and seem rather hopeless to me.
If a hit blew the rig apart...another one will surely toss this bottlecap off like a fly.

Am I grabbing at straws ...yes
But Im fairly convinced that we can actually use a nuke in a useful way for once.

The entire Gulf of Mexico will be covered in crude.

sad

I have an idea....probably crazy but....
A small intense long burn thermonuclear device detonated in the bedrock in a hole drilled parallel and close to the original shaft.
This may be enough to melt bedrock to magma and re-harden just long enough to seal this sucker off. The initial blast wave would push both upward and downward on the existing shaft.....what possible side effects could this have?

Previous devices tested in this fashion created a hollow area with smooth sealed walls....

Or am I out in left field here...

No, I dont think so.....Take for example the "Castle Bravo" shot years ago.
It blew a mile wide crater at wetok...It was a surface detonation.
Im suggesting a SMALL version in bedrock deep under the sea floor.

Previous tunnel tests created caverns of only modest size.

They still would have to drill the new hole too...Time doesnt seem to be on their high priority list....Also if done right...methane wont be an issue.

Risky manuever because if it fails, it'll fail spectacularly with a giant hole pouring out oil, instead of a broken pipe leaking oil
 Quoting: Fool 902341

Or ignite the methane pocket deep in the Earth which results in an explosion that blows out half of the sea bed in the Gulf of Mexico and creates a mile high tsunami that destroys a large chunk of Mexico, all of Cuba, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and about half of Texas.

If that happens, oil will be the least of anyone's worries.

Thats why this must be contained in a small area in the bedrock portion of the drill ...
Just a qwik little boom...magma..hardens...plugged.

It would probably blow the wellhead off and make lots of bubbles for a minute or two....then quickly end...hopefully sealed...self contained and unignited.
The other end would push downward back into the oilfield with a good shot of pressure but sustainable methane ignition really isnt likely.

This oil is not going to stay in the gulf man. Its going to hitch a ride out into the Atlantic.

SO no, the gulf will not be covered. It'll look really bad and a long ass thread of oil miles wide would be working its way up the east coast.

Absolutely not....if it is a 25000 mile find it is too risky with large stores of METHANE and NATURAL GAS and then add in several 100000s gallons of oil...

with nuke equals amplification that could readily cause FAR GREATER damage(as hard as that is to conceptualize with such damage in our face)

Far greater damage and radiation to boot...emp action could also cause issues...on land or set the activity level for volcanoes and EQs off the charts!!!!

Heavier rock can carry the energy wave farther...possibly increasing EQs and eruptions fo several volcanoes threatening...

they are not joking either...

With the CME activity and some other geomagnetic anomalies...it is not a good idea, in fact, it is far more dangerous to everyone...

Yes it would and all sea life in the area and depending on type and size...sea life that is still alive would have even greater threats

for DECADES the gulf will be ruined for seafood, estuaries, for many their livelihood...is no more

Any shrimp, crab, or lobster will be badly contaminated(benzenes) and shellfish MOVE SLOWLY THROUGH POLLUTED WATERS...

I will avoid gulf seafood for a long time now...and no shellfish should be eaten once the oil hits them...
Pregnant women should avoid Tuna and limit seafood...if there is concern-as even before this more contaminants are being found.
