Why can't they simply drop a bunch of concrete debris on top of the leak until it's plugged?
because it is a 40,000 psi geyser. It is like trying to clog a small water fountain with broken glass. Even if they could cover the leak with a mountain of concrete it would still find a way out and then it would be impossible to fix.
A nuclear blast about 200 feet below the seafloor seems to be the only way. But how do you get a nuclear bomb 200ft below the seafloor that is 5000ft in depth?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 792302The problem seems to be that the soil in that part is friable... the pression will find coutless other escapes even if they manage to close the main one, this is gonna end when the whole reservoir of oil and methane is empty.
