Re: BREAKING - Oil Flow is 6.8-38.1 million gal/day - MSM NOW REPORTS FIGURES CLOSER TO THIS AS WELL
It all depends on the final pressures in the oil reserve. BP said they are anywhere from 15,000 psi to 70,000 psi.

That is a very wide gap in the potential pressure. Doesnt BP know how much pressure theyre dealing with? Wouldnt that have been measured before the mishap?

Either way, thats on the order of maximum instantaneous pressure inside a firearm chamber during firing, just to give some perspective. The low end would be around that of a 45 acp and the high end would be that of the highest pressure rifle cartridges. UNREAL! Thats why a weak metal box just aint gonna cut the mustard unless its made of enormous strength.
 Quoting: Ratla 961537

Bingo, the pressures involved are unreal. I wouldn't doubt if there were other phenominon occuring like electrons being stripped and discharging into the earth leaving the oil with a (+) charge when it hits the seawater.

Okay, how much oil is there?

There is a post with a fact sheet from 2005. It was a professional accounting used by the oil companies to search and plan for new oil drills.

Find it, I'm too busy to search it out just yet. I will find it soon though.

When I first heard about the leak rate, I suspected that it was way too low. Frankly I expected a larger rate from such a huge operation, so OP's math does not surprise me, it just means we are in deep caca now.

This seems to apply for a gas release, which is is more influenced to pressure and temperature than a much less compressible oil.

Yes/No?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 875706

I´d say yes. But don´t know for sure.
But if there´s no variable for the mediums compressibility the calculation could be inaccurate to a factor up to 160 (taking methane hydrate decompression volume into comparison)

Data
L = Length of pipe from seafloor to oil = 9,754 meters
D = Diameter of pipe = 914 mm to 215 mm
note - standard diameters for oil drilling, lowest value is used due to depth.
P1 = Pressure in oil reserve = 15,000 psi to 70,000 psi
P2 = Pressure at release point = 2,000 psi
P1-P2 = Pressure difference in transit = 13,000 to 68,000 psi
T = Temperature of oil in reserve = 633*K
note - 35,000 feet is averaged at 360*C
Q = Volumetric Flow Rate
G = Mass Flow Rate
rho = Density of oil = 924 kg/m3

The Calculators Results

70k PSI in Oil Reserve
Q = 352,259 m3/hr
G = 3.25487872E+008 kg/h = 325,487,872 kg/h = 116,301,122 gal/hr

15k PSI in Oil Reserve
Q = 64,210 m3/hr
G = 5.9330372E+007 kg/h = 59,330,372 kg/h = 21,199,527 gal/hr

Conclusion
21 to 116 million gallons per hour

This is mathematical fact and all variables are sound and factual. Please try to debunk this!

Your temp is a mistake, also did you take friction loss into account - there is always friction losses in pipe flow - this reduces the flow rate (Q) and the nozzle pressure (the well head would be analogous to a nozzle in this case).

Re: BREAKING - Oil Flow is 6.8-38.1 million gal/day - MSM NOW REPORTS FIGURES CLOSER TO THIS AS WELL
There isn't enough oil to spill at that rate.

Are you stupid or something?

Well..

In a report from BP in 2009 I read "1 billion barrels of useable oil" Later in that report I read "Likely over 4 billion barrels of oil"

Take the higher estimate of 4 billion barrels.. x 42 for gallons (US) 168 billion gallons of oil.

Even at 480 million gal a day that would take 340+ days to empty.

Although I can't realistically see it at 480 million gallons a day. 2 million gallons an hour could be more appropriate, but still doesn't sound right, so I'll settle at 5% for 24 million gallons a day but even that is over 570000 barrels a day.
 Quoting: OTOC

This is your report from "2009".

2,203 million barrels proved oil reserves remaining at Dec 31st, 2005.
651 unproved
2,854 total over 30 proved fields and 10 unproved fields

[link to news.yahoo.com]
BP has not said how much oil is beneath the Gulf seabed Deepwater Horizon was tapping, but a company official speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the volume of reserves, confirmed reports that it was tens of millions of barrels — a frightening prospect to many.

As I said, there isn't enough oil to spill at this rate.

I think that they are harvesting the oil, or at least trying to. It is not going to hit she shore for a while in masses because the water is being "filtered" with chemicals to separate the oil from water. I might not be right, Im not saying Im positive about this.

So temp isn't an issue, it does change the results but the pressures dealt with are the main contribution to flow rates.

Thread: ***UPDATE*** OIL SPILL IS EQUAL PARTS METHANE AND OIL *** OIL SPILL METHANE WILL TURN THE OCEANS TO ACID and could make the ATMOSPHERE IGNITE???? DOO
You shall know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH shall set you free.
