Quoting: Nine'sIt would be easier living with paralysis than knowing you'd caused someone else to be in a wheelchair for life. The cop and the victim are very close in age. I'd hate to live with what that cop will live with for the rest of his life. actually just punishment would be to make white and mccloskey roomates, with white having to take care of his victim for the rest of his life. |

Another officer. Hopefully, this officer is testifying because he's of higher moral standing than the shooter, rather than in-house politics to "save face." Officers rarely testify against other officers, but in this case the prosecutors say there's one who's very critical of White's actions. The witness who is an officer will testify in the trial. By ERICA BLAKE BLADE STAFF WRITER The counter ticking away on video indicated it was seconds - possibly just three - between the time Ottawa Hills Police Officer Thomas White exited his patrol vehicle and when Michael McCloskey can be seen falling to the ground. It was at that moment, an investigator testified yesterday, that Officer White had fired a single shot. The video taken at about 2:15 a.m. on May 23 last year by the dashboard camera of Officer White's patrol car was shown in Lucas County Common Pleas Court yesterday, during the first day of his criminal trial. Accused of shooting Mr. McCloskey once in the back, Officer White, 27, is charged with felonious assault with a gun specification. Quoting: ChurchFlagYankerI think you're right. All law enforcement are familiar with the term, "Thin Blue Line." It represents the barrier that stands between citizens and chaos. Citizens also have a thin line. It has no color because it's invisible. It represents the difference between being law abiding, taking the law into our own hands, and self defense. It's up to law enforcement as to when and where that invisible line snaps. It's stretched very thin right now. Thank you to all who contributed to the thread. It will be updated when the jury decides whether this cop is guilty, or innocent. Last Edited by Nine's - IN MEMORIAM on 05/11/2010 08:41 PM |

Officer Sargent, who worked with Mr. White on the night of the shooting, testified that he had worked with Thomas White since 2004 said he believed Mr. White to be a "very good," police officer. His concern was that he was "in the line of fire" when Mr. White fired his gun. Officer Sargent also testified that after the incident, when he asked Mr. White if he needed anything, he declined, but said he wanted it off his chest. "He said he hoped that he hadn't made a mistake and that he didn't end up in jail." Officer Sargent also said, "It's a split-second decision and in his opinion, as a trained police officer, justified." Last Edited by Nine's - IN MEMORIAM on 05/15/2010 09:11 AM |

Ken Katsaris, testified in the trial of Thomas White. Mr. Katsaris testified that he saw only one traffic violation on the video, when he sped up, and that he saw no indicators that would "cause concern to an officer." Mr. Katsaris also testified that Mr. White violated protocol by not turning off his siren so that Mr. McCloskey could hear. Mr. Katsaris said that the movement Mr. McCloskey made when he turned around was an "inquiry glance," and not a threatening movement, as Mr. White had testified. After being repeatedly reminded that they could not consider what had happened with "20/20 vision of hindsight," but to only consider what Mr. White knew and saw and felt at that moment, jurors were dismissed to deliberate. Because if you take into account that the two bikers fled at a high rate of speed, then notice that the biker who stops has his hands down like he could be reaching for a gun, and he's looking back over his shoulder at the cop. If I was a cop, and this biker failed to show me his hands like that, for so long, after aggressively speeding away to evade me, I'd probably have shot him too. Put yourself in the cop's shoes. He probably hated to have to do that, but it was to protect his own life. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 970684The difference may lie between whether or not they were fleeing, or simply taking off at a high rate of speed. Mr. White testified that he shouted for the motorcyclist to raise his hands. A 40 yr. police veteran, Mr. Katsaris, said the words Mr. White shouted were, "get down." Either would have been difficult to do in a split second on a motorcycle, even if the motorcyclist could have heard the order over the sound of the siren. |

Watch the video again, and also learn the facts of the case before any more stupid comments. Youve got your facts incorrect, and the jury has already decided on it. The case is very clear. Not only did 1-officer White have no reason whatsoever to shoot, 2-he also no reason to even pull his gun on McCloskey, and 3-he even no reason to pull them over in the first place. As far as your comment that they "fled", they never fled at all. As soon as he turned his lights/siren on, McCloskey came to a stop. So your most basic assumption is absolutely incorrect So in what way whatsoever can you say that this felonious assault was 'justified' (in disagreement with the court I might add)? answer: none; and you are a dangerous idiot if you ever have a firearm in your possession. McCloskey stopped and waited for the officer as ANYONE would. This could have happened to ANYONE of us. McCloskey did nothing wrong in relation to how the incident and shooting transpired. Officer White was 100% at fault. The officer screwed up in a number of respects and screwed up very badly. |
