SHR, when the oil starts spreading out, how thick is it in most places? I've heard all sorts of ranges, from just a thin film, to thick. And if it does vary (which I'm sure it does) what is the 'average'?

I don't know for sure and I doubt anyone does...I have read however that in some places it's 10's of feet thick..of course other places not..this is not a good oil to have a blowout with in the first place...it's loaded with other elements that make it emulsify with seawater and shit sinks...it gets like Oil mouse....dispersants are being thrown at it by the ton which also cause the oil to sink...I have not really been following the oil slick because to me it's irrelevant and a very minor problem as things stand now.


Out of curiosity (like I said, I haven't really been following this closely), point out the major problems. Is it the methane or something?

I will try and make a post later on and attempt to explain exactly what is going on and what we ALL FACE and explain the situation so anyone can understand and not get crazy technical because we should ALL know what is going on here.

I will say this...we are staring at very horrific potential here....this is real bad...and I'm not one to say that often...most of these might happen disaster scenarios have very little chance of being true or coming true and I do not worry at all about 999 out of a 1000 of all these ridiculous IMO Doom scenarios here. ...but this one is very real and it's potentially VERY bad...

The pipe in those clips is 21 inchs, there is a lot of gas as well... if they do complete a link to bring the oil to the surface what happens to all of that gas? Is it normal for oil wells to have so much gas mixed in with the oil?

For Tibor it pretty much is, there is more gas than oil in this reserve.....they deal with the gas and they have the equiptment to do it...gas is common to be with oil. They also are well aware of hydrates and pretty much everything associated with oil production, they just have not been very good at estimating the volumes etc associated with dealing this blowout...

I bet with all the methane bubbles its not even safe at all for them to even be anywhere over it.

My ideas is:

Take a heavy piece of alloy or rock and sharpen it at the point. Kind of like a wide plumb-bob. Attach wide fins with propellers to it which will be attached by leads to ships used to lower it in a coordinated effort. It will lodge itself in the hole. That's if it was a hole on the bottom.

But because its a pipe on its side maybe a giant slab will work better. A slab of something really heavy. take into account the contour of the bottom it will be resting on. Use guidelines from several ships-or propellers to steer it down, but let its weight guide it.

It blows my mind that not more people are aware of whats really going on.

And does the oil have any affect on surface tempature of water? Remember, just a couple degree change in water makes the hurricanes go off the charts...like Katrina did.

I've checked it out...water's normal albedo is near zero absorbing most light...oil slicks have an interesting effect of preventing the heat sink into the lower levels of the hydrocline but over heats the very surface...how that effects the weather....haven't found that yet but I'm sure it won't be pleasent.
