it was a dream. he was a cartoon because you watch family guy. he showed up in your dream because you were expecting him to. You associated the light with a positive emotion so thats what you experienced.
There is much more to the dream world than random things, but it takes practice. first through lucid dreaming, then OBE/astral travel.
The #1 rule in dreaming is thought/emotion = action/scenery. in order to explore the true dream world behind the veils of your imagination you must be thoughtless and emotionless while lucid dreaming.
would you recommend a book or documentary on lucid dreaming or astral projection? I always wanted to learn how to fly outside of my body.

I like the lucidology approach, which uses the bodys physiological traits approaching and during sleep to induce lucidity without utilising any visualisation or "mystic" style exercises... check the vids on youtube... lucidology. Other then that, you can try LeBerge (Stephen), he is considered an expert in the field. I'm working on this myself atm, I have had one confirmed lucid dream/obe expeience and it was cool enough to make me try it as a serious study. Good luck.
