Wow, man, that was a lot of typing!

The one thing I question is if it is even possible to attach another B.O.P. on top of the existing one.

As I understand it, we only have 5 ROV subs capable of operating down there, and I question if that is enough to wrestle a new BOP into place on top of a wide open gusher.
 Quoting: Evil Twin

LoL...well we both know I can blab off some mega posts...lol...don't know about 5 ROVs but I would not be surpised at that number at all...5,000 feet can crush a Los Angels class sub...actually think it's pretty good they got as many as they did out there as fast as they did...

I cannot see that put a new stack on having much chance either...no way can they just "float over" with one...it would be hitting a pine cone with a fire hose...if they even tried that I would imagine some sort of gantry system...and a real sturdy one...I just don't see it being anything but waaaay difficult...but they do have a new one out there....I'm sure they are HOPING they don't have to try that one.

The important question is how much oil is under the leak.

That, my friend, is public information. It is a shitload and a half, one of the biggest finds ever. More methane than oil in that reserve, which is not really good news.

Do you have the link? How much does BP or did BP project was in there when they made the discovery?

Well done, SHR. I'm still curious as to what caused this blowout, but that is an answer I'm relatively certain that I'll never receive. It seems all we can do is take the info we are given and come to our own conclusions. You have certainly helped in this regard.

SHR, at least your trying to think. You just need to realize all of this has been thought of. I knew the latest scheme would fail. They need to get busy now drilling a parallel well and get this thing stopped.I still think theyre allowing the pressure to vent intentionally, they may have a long wait.

they cant do much with the drill string in the hole.

that is why the rams won't work- too much lateral pressure.

hope the relief well works 1st time or it could go on literally for years.

The idea I proposed will work, and will take three weeks to complete it a suitable drilling rig can be moved into place. The well doesnt have to be but a few thousand feet deep.

OP, can you answer this. Why has the flow not froze itslf out? I have worked with these hydrates hundreds of times (never underwater), they can only form when there is a restriction to the flow, and unless you are doing anything to warm up the flow or pump methanol they always freeze off?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 971027

I don't really know...maybe there is not enough water in the pipes, or maybe to much volume flowing through?....I know for a fact they are forming plenty outside the pipes when they are out in the free water.

Re: The BP Deep water horizon, Macondo Well Blowout. and what we are facing in the Gulf.
AWESOME READ SHR! THANK YOU!

That was a lot of work and makes the nightmare much clearer.

I have had a REAL BAD feeling about this for the past 2 weeks.

Some of the financial/Euro doom along with the supposed slowing of the oil flow due to an increase in methane gas had taken the doom edge off this clusterf*ck.

Now after reading your analysis I have that sick/dead feeling in the pit of my stomach again. Like finding out that you are the passenger on a runaway train.

ELE? I think it's possible. What happens if one or two more additional GOM rigs blowout?

My main question is what happens in the worse case scenario?

In that case IMO the U.S. is toast, but will there be anywhere in the world that will be less affected, at least for a while?

Thanks again SHR and please keep us posted with any updates from your contacts.

I don't really know
 Quoting: SHR

Te formation of methane hydrate will not occur IN the blown out well because the material escaping is very hot, @ 400F.However, as the methane escapes into the ocean it rapidly decompresses, which causes a rapid cooling, and in the presence of cold sea water hydrates will form.
