You mean nobody has mentioned the earwax cure? That surprises me -- whenever there is a thread about cold sores, somebody says put earwax on it and then several others jump in and say it really works. I don't know if it does or not, but it sounds rather humorous.

In the UK there is a yeast extract called Marmite (you put it on toast) same as vegemite in Australia - but it cured me of coldsores, just a tiny dab and they go! - havn't had one for yrs.

I'd check the side effects first before I'd turn to OTC drugs.

Here are some facts :

Water dissolves the scab on the cold sore, and this will slow the healing. Keep it dry. Hard to do when it's at the corner of your mouth.

Do not put any kind of salve or ointment on it, because :

- Salves and ointments keep the sore moist, and this will prolong the sore.

- The salve or ointment may help the virus transfer to new spots.

- The virus can live in salves and cosmetics. Keep lipstick and chapstick away from the sore, because the virus can live in the stick.

My remedy : get some 99% rubbing alcohol, put a drop on the sore every now and then throughout the day. This will kill any virus that is coming out, and will dry the sore. The drier you can keep it, the quicker it will heal up.

Actually I have had a same situation it was cellulitis... Which is an infection that you pick up by touching stuff and scratching your skin... Mine started out with cold sores in the corner of the mouth which I tought was because I was sleeping with my mouth open because I couldn't breathe through my nose. Then it started spreading away from my mouth onto my cheeks and form hard bump like dark spots, I just thought it was acne... I tried using Abreva on the cold sores and that was the result... I eventually had to go to the emergency room because my eye started swelling up and grew even more after taking Benadryl. And while all of this is uncomfortable I am also pregnant so all I can take is Benadryl and Tylenol. The ER prescribed an antibiotic and sent me home... However they said that the reason that it was cellulitis was because it was spreading out and hardening and that normally they hospitalize a person for a few days and give them steroids via IV. Also cellulitis can kill you. So if it starts changing make sure to call the doctor and make an appointment for the same day if possible.

dam sorry i used to get them all the fucking time. Then i started to drink distilled water only. And i mean only distilled water. Not for the cold sores however i have noticed I have not had a single one since. Never been sick either. going on 3 years now feels great.

But as healing goes The best thing to do is leave it alone once it if full blown. The more you try to dry or over lubricate it you the more frustrated you will become and stressed out which could also lead to more cold sores. Just leave it alone give it a few weeks then change your diet.

THIS WILL CURE IT!!! My stepfather had one coming up recently & asked me did I know of a natural cure. I gave him L-lysine tablets (but I gave him 8 first, then 4 every 4 hrs or so for a couple of days, 3 capfuls of colloidal silver & a cotton bud with CS on it & it didn't even reach the blister stage!!!!

Apply ice cube to it. cold sores are heat sensitive. Baking soda works to neutralize PH balance. apply dry baking soda to the sore. Also works for inside mouth. Hurts like hell for a few seconds.
Depending on what your body is lacking, minerals are needed such as zinc or magnesium.

This is THE best remedy that's been listed here. Ice it for ten minutes at a time at least 6 or 7 times a day as soon as you feel the tingle.

I've had them not even break open just using ice. But if they do happen to break open, they only stay that way for a couple days before it starts healing and the breakout is very minimal.
