I hate them things. Used to take forever to go away. I don't get them very often any more, come to think of it, I haven't had one in a couple of years. I think I just got a medicated lip balm of some sort and used it.

I've heard it was a form of herpes, but I used to get them just before I would get a cold. Now that I think about it, I haven't had a cold in a long time either.

LOL I know its a form of herpes and no I DO NOT suffer the other type of herpes thankfully. I get them a few times a year. Its just in a bad spot to heal at the corner of my mouth. Maybe I will try a regular lip balm - I just thought that might have been futile.

It could also be a potassium deficency.
I had this problem when I was taking Omiprazole (generic over-the -counter, Prilosec type stuff for my stomach).
I searched around, and found that it is caused by a vitamin deficency.
When I stopped taking the stuff for my stomach, it went away.
Might want to think about any new medications you are taking...could be the root cause of it.

It could also be a yeast infection...
If you have been taking heavy antibiotics, it can cause Thrush/Yeast infection in your mouth...it will make the corners of your mouth crack like that.

Herpes dosen't usually happen in the corners of your mouth like that.
I was born with the kind that causes fever blisters when you are drained and stressed out...my Mother had it when she was pregnant with me, so that's how i was born with it.
It has never caused the corners of my mouth to crack...
just a cold sore , on my lip, if I get too drained physically, over a long period of time.
So, I wouldn't listen to the ones that said it's Herpes, because I highly doubt that's what it is.

Abreva is over the counter, right? I don't know how effective it is. I've been fortunate in that arena.

Thank you for opening my eyes to other possibilities. Actually my cold sores have never broken out in the corner of the mouth before so you may be onto something. If its potassium deficiency I could eat more bananas. I have not been on anti biotics lately but in the past, have had to rely on them for sinus infections.

"The other type of herpes". Allow me to help educate you.

There are two prevalent types of herpes. HSV1 and HSV2. Both are transmittable to either oral or genital. Typically HSV1 is referred to "Oral Herpes" however, 57% of those with genital herpes have HSV1 genitally. Or more inaccurately stated by the public "I got Oral Herpes on my crotch". If you provide oral sex, you will pass it just like anyone who has it genitally would to your partner's genitals. Assuming you're shedding, that is. You may be shedding whether you have an active outbreak or not.

Please ... educate yourself before you add to the 1 in 4 adults who have this.

A side note: When someone goes to the doctor and gets a battery to check for STDs a test for HSV is not ran. You must pay an additional $200-$300 for the Western Blot Test. So, an estimated 80% of those infected with HSV are not even aware they have it.

The amino acid L-lysine is a specific for this. Take two or three caps daily until it goes away, then one cap daily for maintenance and you'll never get one again. You can also use Carmex to dry it up topically until the L-lysine heals it. DO NOT USE Carmex as a lip salve, it was designed specifically to dry cold sores and WILL dry lips too.

I grind salt to a powder and make a paste with water. Put the past on your sore for about 10 min. It will sting a little bit but dry up and leave in a few days if you do this a couple of times a day.

Dab Listerine using a q-tip.

A natural remedy is called L-Lysine,(make sure it say L in front of Lysine) in can be found at most stores like Walmart, Walgreen's and so on in herb section.. It is an amino acid. Another recommendation is to stay away from acidic foods, like orange juice or anything in the acidic family, until that is gone. Cold sores can pop out when your bodies PH is to acidic.

Avoid or limit caffeine intake as well. Do not touch the cold sore because it can spread by being aggravated. keep area dry. If I get a cold sore, I take 1000mg a day. It is a safe to take..

apple cider vinegar dab some on with your finger.
and do it often.
mine will go away the same or next day with this.
