I recall taking 666 in the late 70s and early 80s. And if my sister and I recall correctly at the time the liquid remedy contain magnesium sulfate(Epsom Salt). The need to take it with copious amounts of waster is because it had a strong laxative effect. Like my elders said "it'll run the cold outta you!" and it did. After taking it I always got better very quickly.

666 cold preparation and cold tablets are still made by Monticello Drug Co. according to their site the company:
was started in 1908 by Tharp and Thurston Roberts, who got a patent on a prescription locally known as Roberts Remedies #666. This prescription consisted of a high concentration of quinine along with other ingredients and became the best selling remedy for malaria, chills, fever, influenza, colds, constipation, and bilious headaches.

My co workers and I were talking about this medicine a few days ago, it was so strong, if it did not cure you, then you need to be in the hospital. It really worked, my grandmother gave it to us during the winter when we would get the flu, and sometimes I would rather be sick, it taste really bad, but it did work, and by the next day you were already feeling better

It was some very bitter shit, some called it 3 sixes, she's right.

I remember "Three Sixes" well from the 60's. I remember seei git the drug store but we never had it or took it. It had a very old timey look to the bottle and label. It was an old fashioned product that had a loyal following among poorer rural people and blacks.

Yes! My grandmother gave it to me in pill form. That stuff really worked fast. That was 1974-76. I always said that those pills would run the devil out of you.

Yes, about sixty years ago, my Dad always made us all take a Three 666's tonic. I did not know it was a cold medicine.

I took it once as a child but I didn't like the way it made my head spin around and the projectile pea green vomit was no fun either. But yes, it's the real deal.

Three 6's (666) is what we called it when my siblings and I were children. And yes, our Mother gave it to us as well!! This was by far the nastiest medicine, I've ever taken and vowed I would never give it to my children. As one post mentioned, it probably worked, if only one could get past the taste first. Don't necessarily know if it was a Southern thing, but do know from NY to NC, everyone knew how awful that medicine was. Over joyed, that it was taken off the market.

I took this medicine when when i was a kid also. its its extremely nasty, but your cold qill go away in like 2days max. its yellow, thin and coats your tongue something vicious. If you can actually stomach the medicine without throwing up, your cured. It taste like the flavor in your mouth after you eat cranberry sauce then drink water. Try it, but be warned its nasty.

I had to take it too and it was one of those things kids ran from and hid under the bed. But so help me, it fixed whatever ailed you. Came across a place here in Atlanta that carries the REAL one...I don't know what this one with Tylenol in it is all about! If you ever find the real deal, don't question, just take it when you get sick. We used to say it was called 3 sixes cause it tasted so nasty the devil didn't even want to take it!

Yes I used to take it as a child. The most awful thing that you could ever take, I mean the absolute worst. But when you woke up in the morning you felt like a new person. I cant stress how terrible it was to take. I found some in a country drug store and I make sure that I keep a bottle handy. Nothing works better for the cold and flu, but it is horrible.

Yes, I could still find it up to 1993 in a store in NJ. Southern folk swear by it. It is the nastiest concoction on earth. BUT it got rid of flu, phlegm, body aches, chills and fevers. 2-3 days tops. You have to be feeling like pure crap and wanna die to take it. I understand it was taken off the market and replaced with something ineffective.

YES, I remember 666 cold medicine. One of the best nasty tasting products on the market many years ago. I had a very bad head cold and I was refusing to take it. While sitting in a chair my sister pulled my hair back and slammed the bottle in my mouth. Few minutes later all this snot came running out of my nose, alot of snot.
Another great medicine that is no longer on the market was Black Draught, NASTY but worked good, really cleaned you out!
