Quoting: Suie 973323On May 17, 2010 08:32 UTC, The Iceland Met office indicates that a small earthquake has occurred at the Katla location. In what could be an early indication of the event that is expected to occur (an eruption of Katla), a small earthquake is reported at the site. Although a single earthquake is not a precursor of an eminent eruption, it could be the first ’sigh’ of the awakening powerful giant. Historically, Katla has erupted after the eruption of it’s close neighbor, Eyjafjallajokull, which first erupted on April 14, 2010 and is ongoing at this moment. Magma channels beneath to the two volcanoes are thought to be interconnected. A Katla eruption would likely be about ten times as powerful at the Eyjafjallajokull eruption and could cause worldwide disruption while expelling huge volumes of volcanic ash into the stratosphere which would circle the globe potentially for years, depending upon the magnitude of the eruption. Not to be alarmist, but have you started your food storage plan? Basic survival preparedness is a personal responsibility that was simply a way of life of our ancestors. Let’s not forget how. [link to modernsurvivalblog.com] What size was it? It's not showing on the USGS earthquake site. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 973412Not sure, but I think less than 0.5 lol. We've seen these pop up every few days or so. Actually, they're pretty normal all over Iceland's volcanoes. I doubt this is an indication of anything. Katla will probably erupt within a year though. |

The Katla webcam was off this weekend, so can't say when exactly these lines showed up, but they look to me like they're fissure cracks/crevices. |
Ratla User ID: 961537 United States 05/17/2010 03:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Until you see an ongoing earthquake swarm at Katla and also signs of inflation, then youll know its close. The tiny singular occasional EQ is normal for the area. There was one last week as well. There are no signs pointing to an imminent eruption of Katla yet. The volcanoes Bardarbunga and Askja have had far more seismic activity lately. Katla has been very quiet. |

If it were fissures you would see cascades of magma shooting out. Its just some rivers flowing through the landscape. No uplift out of the ordinary has been recorded. A few millimeters only but that can be explained by the melting of the Myrdaljokull icecap. There is the midnight sun so there is a lot of melting and cracking which results in what gets registered as earthquakes. These are usually quite shallow (1-2km). Some deeper EQ´s has been registered as well but they are most likely tectonic in nature and not magmatic. Until there is major inflation (not caused by released pressure of melting ice) and swarms of EQ´s i wouldnt worry. And even IF Katla were to go off the eruption wouldnt be a world changing event. It can get as big as VEI 5 but that causes most disturbance in northern europe. |
