Isn´t Katla like 100times stronger than Eyjafjallajokull?? 10 times stronger were Hekla and Grimsvotn i think, Katla 100times?!

katla is 10 X. or so i think.

The caldera is like 10x bigger.. but the eruption could hundreds of times more powerful and explosive. It wouldn't last as long as a E15 eruption, but it would cause a big mess in a hurry.

But only Katla is a Caldera, Eyjafjallajokull is a Strato Volcano, the caldera measures 14km from one side to the other, Mount Katla is covered with 365m+ maybe few 100 feet more ice, so i really think it´s 100times stronger, a possible supervolcano, as someone said maybe VEI 7 to VEI 8, i first thought in measures of a VEI 6, but even a VEI 7 would be followed by devastating effects.

Did you hear on the video ??, like three times the flow of river nile and mississippi combined together, and thats only the flood, what if some large piece of Rocks get ejected into the sea and cause a Tsunami together with large amounts of water entering the sea?

England and maybe Europes coasts could be in great danger, Katla is a Caldera, so it means it should have a moving hotspot, if that hotspot moves nearer to the coast of Iceland, House sized Rocks is like spitting peas for that thing, IT´S A CALDERA.

Im normally quite calm about ongoing things, but in this Case, with the 75% Chance of Katla following Eyjafjallajokull, I AM FUCKING WORRIED, no it´s not even the only damn volcanoe there is with the hottest magma on freaking earth, no, there are Hekla, and Grimnsvotn, little fuckers, Grimsvotn erupted together with Laki 1783-1785 with short intermissions

so, Katla is a dangerous "little" earthhole, and i have to admit, I am afraid this Monster will awake.

Iceland hasn't been too worried about Eyjafjallajokull. But--- Eyjafjallajokull ALWAYS precedes Katla. And Katla is the one that's overdue.

Here's my prediction for the next 5 years.

It's not going to erupt.

1918 was a small 24 days eruption of Katla,10.600 B.C.
there was the largest known Eruption of Katla, the so called Sòlheimar-Eruption, an Eruption of Plinian Type [link to en.wikipedia.org] the only known one Plinian Eruption known for that Caldra, 10.600 B.C. it produced 10km³ of rhyolitic Tephra [link to en.wikipedia.org] Lahars flooded Myrdal and also Pyroclastic Flows, scientifically proven and known as loose Material and the so called Solheimar Ignimbrites [link to en.wikipedia.org] .

The Traces of the Material reach far into the South and INTO the sea, and are Signs of one of the largest Eruption ever known happening on Iceland.

The Caldera propably formed at this moment or heavily enlarged itself at the emptying of the Magma Chamber at this opportunity.

Katla eruption of VEI 7 or 8 ? -- no way.

Katla erupting as a VEI 6 (latest example would tbe the Mt Pinatubo eruption of 1991) is possible, but would be highly unlikely. VEI 5(ie see Mt ST Helens eruption 1980) or less would be more likely.

The last VEI 6 eruption in Iceland was Laki in 1783, and Bardarbunga in 1477 before that. Katla has erupted 15 times in the past 1,000 years with the strongest being a VEI 5 eruption. Katla's 1918 eruption was a VEI 5.

I haven't even finished this thread but found this to be the perfect question.
cme's cosmic ribbons, radiation, galactic alignment. Th thing is when is it the right time to throw away responsibilities and find a nice warm beach in the southern hemisphere.
But even if we did, who wants to live like a cast member of survivor? believe me, those reality show contestants would starve to death in a real life situation. We are here now, just enjoy, no matter how hard it is to pay bills doom is a lot worse, unless u r the survivalist type, if u r then u can be a survivalist now and not need the doom to do your thing.

Don't forget that the effect is worst here in Iceland - already people living near Eyjafjallajökull are near exhaustion. Ash continues to fall all over their land and homes, the farmers are close to giving up.

If the big ones start to blow I dare not imagine the consequences here.

We have time. I'm thinking sometime in a 5-7mo.

Ive been thinking about this a bunch and I think I found good news. NASA claimed there are occasional tears in the magnetosphere and atmosphere promoting heat loss when it happens. But, it should act as an exhaust pipe. As the heat leaks out, so will some of the gasses (not sure about the ash because its heavier but it is possible). So go figure. Now I'm praying for magnetosphere hits...

Anyway I expect everything to get hazier like a winter storm coming except instead of taking a day to get cloudy, it will take a month. Then it will go into a pretty typical winter but instead of lasting 3-5mo., it will last 12 or so. Pray for a short burst from Katla and not a long burst!
Many people will get a white Christmas. Snow is a ton of fun.

PS - Beware of when the summer starts to come back as it will have to fight its way through! Mini tornado shelters may wind up useful. Sewers work too. Make sure you follow good shelter safety no matter where you are!

I think weather close to the border will get unusual being hard to predict. Typical patterns will be off and ocean temps will change. If the oil slick continues to bleed, that too will mess up weather. Both the cold and warm fronts colliding will surely make some intense weather.

This all leads me to preps.

PREP - just use your head.

Foods, canned goods, consumables, candles, KI tablets (in case you get stuck near a troublesome nuke plant), fishing supplies, cannery jars for canning, powered stuff, toilet paper, trash bags, masks (the better the quality the longer they last), BIC lighters, tools, fill the house with plants, plastic, cords of wood, clothing, snow shoes, salt, DOWN SOUTH - ANTIFREEZE and wiper squirter antifreeze, snow tires, etc. >find things you or others can make from home and sell<.

THINK. Use your head. Its everyone's personal responsibility to take care of themselves and a 8yo can survive a long winter.

I had a dream this morning. Don't remember anything about the dream except asking someone? Katla, isn't that the name of that volcano?


Soooo no prediction here, but strange that I dreamt that and only remembered asking that question.

In 1783 there was a proposal to transfer the remaining population of Iceland, some 40 thousand souls, after a quarter had died from the Laki eruption to Denmark. They refused so we are still here.

However, we don't know what's in store if the volcanism increases much so maybe there may not be any other alternative.
