They didn't ban short-selling, they just banned naked short selling, which AFAIK is already illegal, since you're selling the stock/bond without actually borrowing it. Of course markets are gonna get fucked a bit, but it is extremely different from banning short-selling totally.

Canellor Merkel just spoke in the Reichstag. The german government is yet undecided what to do but they are acting now. Looks like they are no longer willing to take shit from the banks or other EU countries. The government is under pressure as the german people are getting more pissed each day. Mr. Sarkozy made the mistake of a lifetime by using the 2+4 contracts to blackmail the german government to pay the debts of other countries. This is part of the german answer: The german ban means a weak Euro, so fuck you Mr. Sarkozy. Look like if all else fails Germany WILL go back to the Deutsche Mark and then the Euro is history - might be the best solution for Germany and it will be good for the US and the dollar too.
