Assuming this change has to do with gravity is ASSUMING that gravity is the predominant force at work in the Universe when it CLEARLY IS NOT!

Electricity in space plays a far greater role than gravity ever will..

Big Mystery: Jupiter Loses a Stripe Play Audio Download

Lost: A giant belt of brown clouds big enough to swallow Earth twenty times over. If found, please return to Jupiter.

May 20, 2010: In a development that has transformed the appearance of the solar system's largest planet, one of Jupiter's two main cloud belts has completely disappeared.

"This is a big event," says planetary scientist Glenn Orton of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. "We're monitoring the situation closely and do not yet fully understand what's going on."

Thanks! We used to run a planetarium program about pioneer and voyager at the public observatory I worked at. When this story appeared I instantly remembered seeing those old, old pictures of Jupiter from the program showing the red spot without the southern equatorial band. Sure enough, a quick google search confirmed it.

Astronut, do you know when the first instance of the disappearing ring occurred? I've yet to see/find the "first" instance of the missing ring.

I also read somewhere that it was a cycle of 13 years of ring change. I guess if you try and collect all images of Jupiter available that would prove if it is unique or not.

Jupiter, 1973. Notice the missing southern equatorial belt; the great red spot is "naked" once more.

The entire solar system is changing. Earth as well. Call it warming or whatever you want. It all has to do with the end of the cycle in 2012 and ascension.

That's a good question. The problem is that really good astrophotography of the planets is a relatively new phenomenon. I have some old prints of planets taken by professional observatories 50 years ago and they're frankly a joke compared to what most amateurs can achieve today ('lucky imaging' techniques didn't exist back then and film was generally much slower than a modern CCD). I'm sure there are plenty of sketches from visual observations going back for centuries, but those are not as easy to access by simple googling.

SOLAR FILAMENT: The sun may be spotless today, but it certainly is not blank. A long dark magnetic filament is looping around the northeastern limb, stretching almost 100,000 km from end to end:

Long, bushy filaments like this have been known to grow unstable and erupt, producing a type of spotless flare called a "Hyder flare." If that happens now, Earth would likely feel some effects from the blast because the filament is turning to face our planet. Readers with solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor developments.

One scientist has told TheWeatherSpace.com that he believes it is not just subject to Jupiter. He believes it is a solar system wide event in which it has to do with material in the solar system, possibly the sun magnetic field effects.

Once again trying to hide facts from the masses!
When this was first reported, I took it as DEFINITIVE proof that the changes Earth is facing is not just our change but a solar system change.
Then they say, "oh, this is normal" about every 15 years it changes.
And I'm thinking.. REALLY...In all my 40 years, of school, of observation, and looking at all our old school text books(We home school). The face has always remained the same in my lifetime.
The face of Jupiter remained the same.
Even after the comet impact. Besides the obvious, and expected changes due to the impact.

Pray fir the best, prepare for the worst!
The youngster said angrily " If our founding Fathers could see what is going on, they would roll over in their graves!"
The Ol'Timer shook his head and smiled. " No, they would be grabbing their guns".

Oh really? So I just "imagined" running a planetarium show years ago that showed Jupiter without the south equatorial belt from 1973? Sorry, but your textbooks are not proof that pioneer 10's pictures are fake. Those pictures have been around for decades. Jupiter's appearance is constantly changing, though usually more subtly. Storms come and go, I've watched it myself for years.

A shadow from a transit of one of Jupiter's moons. You can see that from earth all the time (freaked me out the first time I saw it though since I didn't know what it was). Here's an example from 2007:

Imagine what happens if whatever caused this swings by Saturn and picks up all the debris from the rings as well as the moons of each planet that passes by. Then it swings by Earth with all those in tow.

Not really worthy of a pin considering this is quite a regular occurance (contrary to the header of this thread) on the galactic scale of things.
