Suggestions for Bass Bait?
We are going Bass fishing Monday, anyone have a suggestion for bait?

We use the minnows and nightcrawlers, and some other bait, but actually, I want to beat the pants off my hubby and catch a bigger fish than he does..

Suggestions?

How big of bass are there in the lake? If there are huge bass like 7 - 10 lbs, use a 4 - 6" golden shiner. You have to catch the shiners first though. The golden pond shiners, not the minows from the bait shop.
If you're using nightcrawlers they work good, but instead of balling the thing up on the hook a million times, make it look natural and run it through like a rubber worm... just be gentle casting it. they hit on them that way more.
For lures I had pretty good luck with a flatfish in the 70s, but they seem hard to find now. The red and white ones worked best.
For rubber worms I always did best with the purple ones.

Takes some crankbaits or spinner baits and maybe throw some jig grubs and topwater baits too now.

I use spinner baits, and catch fish all the time. Hell bass will eat almost anything if it is presented properly.

A clear top-water torpedo. Cast it, let it sit a couple of seconds, then slowly reel it in using short jerks to give the lure action.

Re: Suggestions for Bass Bait?
We just called them Bass Busters. Any sort of spinner bait with yellow/green rubber fringe. Spinner part or jig head parts are not so important.

Rip about half the fring off, cast the lure onto a dock and let it plop off the edge into the water. One big bass per dock! Have Fun!!!

Wow, we have mostly pan fish, some bass, northern and trout, but nothing as big as you describe here and if I can mention, they are very smart.

Re: Suggestions for Bass Bait?
Depends on the time of day.

Early morning or late evening, when they're topfeeding, a hula popper or Ghost works great.

Midday heat, a deep-diving spinner along ridges or deadfalls will work well, just make sure to use covered (snagless) hooks.

And for REALLY effective all-day work, use SMALL small frogs - one to two inch babies... hooked through the front jaw. Cast 'em gentle and let 'em swim... they do most of the work for you.

Cheers!

Yeah, the big ones are smart. But this time of year if they have started nesting they will attack almost anything. First big bass I caught when I was about 11, it was their breeding season and I just bounced a rubber shrimp tail off the fishes head a few times. It finally got fed up with my "attack" and hit that thing with fury.
The thing with those golden shiners, you have to hook them and give them about 4 - 5' of line below a bobber. That lets them swim around quite a bit but they aren't so close to the bobber where the bass can know what's going on.

anise extract is a fish attractant and it also removes the human smell when you bait the hook

There was actually a book about that I read years ago (Prophecy) but it was about some kind of mercury poisoning from loggers in Maine and it made animals grow huge and also mutate and become violent. Hope you don't have that.

Maine is one of the places I've caught big bass too, and I've seen people catch 10 pounders there.

Re: Suggestions for Bass Bait?
I went bass fish'n today. Sunny calm day no wind. I was plugging along the bank when I saw a branch moving up and down. As I trolled in a little closer, I could see a big grey squirrel was running out to the end of the brank. It's weight was causing the branch dipping it into the water.

As I moved in a little closer, I could see there was a stump sticking about 4 inches out of the water and there were 3 acorns sitting on top of it. The squirrel got brave and jumped onto the stump to eat the acorns. All of a sudden ***BAMMM*** the biggest bass I have ever seen grabbed the squIrrel and they both disappeared on the other side.

And I'll be damnd if 5 minutes later, that bass didn't put 3 more acorns on that stump.
